Hi all, I'm getting married in early November this year and we're both keen to get away for a kiting honeymoon.
I keep hinting at Cauncy's Midwest Windfest but we're from WA and the thought of a week in Dongara isn't blowing her away (see what I did there hehe). Somewhere a little more exotic would be the go.
Budget pretty open and we've got up to three weeks. Both competent kiters and warm flat water would be the ideal but open to just about anything.
Anyone got got any suggestions?
Yeah, I was in NE Brazil, mainly Cumbuco, for a couple of months a few years ago. Warm and windy every day, Cumbuco is the centre of kiting there, lots of fun but a bit of a sh!thole to be honest. The wind is great but the water is either choppy or crowded in the local lagoons.
Jericoacoara is a much much nicer place to stay, very pretty, clean, no cars and great atmosphere, but not quite as convenient for kiting. If I was doing it again and was not on a tight budget like last time I would do one of the 1-2 week downwinders, maybe with a stay at Jeri prior. We did a couple of much shorter downwinders with a beach buggy and they were brilliant, little flat areas where you can stop and play for an hour (often with no-one there) interspersed by waves.
Road trip, prestige wind and water along our coastline, make the windfest part of trip, fly out for a day to the Abrolhos islands ( stunning ) shark bay , stay at dirk hartog homestead, cruise the bay at sunset quaffing some champagne, head up to Ningaloo few days kiting and shake the bed to pieces in the chalet overlooking the reef
Ningaloo
Abrolhos
what about Mauritius ?
One Eye looks amazing and the accomodation appears to be pretty decent. A non kiter should be able to have a pretty nice vacation
Hey Simstat,
been to Brazil last year in Sept.! We really enjoyed it as you have great flatwater spots, but also sweet wave spots along the coast. We flew into Fortaleza and got a rental car to see different spots. Just to name a few:
- Cumbucco: everything is said about combucco. Crowded and the water is really dirty.
- Taiba: one of our favorites. Gets crowded at the weekends, when the locals arrive.
- Jeri: good place to go out for drinks, but for kiting not ideal. If you go there by car a 4wd is much more comfortable as there is no road.
- Barra Grande: Cool little town with nice hotels/hostels, good restaurants and an empty spot. You can make great downwinder to a real flatwater paradise.
But there are much more spots on the way to discover.
We had all our kite-gear with us, but we only used the sizes 6 and 8.
Cheers, Nils
Great feedback everyone. Thank you.
Cauncy, I've planted the WA trip seed. Actually did Horrocks 2 days, Shark Bay 8 days then Dongara 3 days in 2015. Awesome trip. Throwing in Ningaloo is a great idea. Holiday at home and still get to the MWWF...
Done a bit of research on Brazil. Not sold yet. Bloody long flights and then overland as well.
Starting to look a little closer to home.
Got friends that just came home from Mauritius. They loved it but Nov is off season.
Hmmmmm, still looking. Egypt is a possibility still.
Holy sh!t I want to go on a fishing trip.
Did the guy who grabbed that cray have 2 inch punctures in his wrist from the little legs? Bloody hell!
Hey Simon,
That time of year is good (Start of the season) for both Vietnam and Philippines, both easy flights from Perth.
