I am planning on travelling to Tas for 10 days for the Xmas and New year period and would like to know any recommended places to kite. I will be mostly on the east coast, being fairly new to kiting having come from a surfing background I can kite upwind ok, but would like to kite in a safe environment. I have all my own equipment so would not need to hire anything, Any suggestions would be very useful, thanks

hey kernowkiter,

loads of spots, and crew doing missions up and down the coast to hook up with, bring your 12 and 9 and check out the tassie section of the forums for more detailed info. You can also find us on http://www.tksa.org.au/

With Falls Festival being on at Marion Bay about that time you might like to either go higher up the coast or swing by into the hobart/south arm area, due to massive crowds

there's a fair crowd of kiters heading to tas over the chrissy ny period by the sounds of it!
I'll also be there, and am looking forward to getting out at some of the spots I keep hearing about!
hopefully santa can deliver us some sweet winds while we're there!!

Flat water or surf?
If you are in hobart you can go out on the derwent river, easy from sandy bay. If you want to touch the bottom try Lauderdale. both places usually get a good afternoon sea breeze. Northern east coast, st helens, surf bicheno (usually a good seabreeze here), no surf swansea/ dolphins sands. surf east coast from hobart = marion bay (only not when falls is on as suggested good sea breeze here) between east coast and hobart = dodges ferry/carlton beach (carlton faces south with swell, the western beach facing 7 mile beach is flat), behind 7 mile beach is pit water = flat and shallow.

Thanks for the information, I will probably be around Freycinet National park for a large part of the holiday. Flat water is prefered, waves ok..Many spots around here?

Take a look at Friendly Beach, not far from Coles Bay, its National Park so you need a permit but its a beautiful place, and should get a seabreeze,

Friendly beaches = surf on the eastern side of the peninsular in the national park or state forest,
for calmer water try heading in to swanwick on the frecynet side of the end of dolphin sands. You should be able to launch from the beach into great oyster bay from there with out traveling too far for relatively flat water. the beaches closer in to coles bay are often more sheltered due to the Hazards (granite mountains), the beach at swanwich should give a better chance of clean air. there can be a strong tide in the river mouth there, the sea breeze often comes in south/ south east so some runs across the mouth and along dolphin sands should be possible, keeping you safe from the depths

HI Timomo - written like a local..a wild guess.. but maybe one who used to sail out of the SBSC?

Kernokiter - if it's flat water at freycinet you are after, definitely recommend Swanwick. Friendlies is a great surf spot - if it's working tho, I would recommend being confident in the surf before hitting it. Hey, good luck with all that scenary. It can be hard to take

Looks like we might get a big crew for summer then . Might see you guys on the water and as the Llama said, check out the TKSA wesite/ PM if you more info.

hey TAS crew. im coming over from perth to see family from the 22-29 will be staying at launie but may have a beach house aswell. would be keen to catch up with some crew, im well confident in waves on strapless surfboard, and will be bringing 13/9 nomads n prob the twiny too. Is there some decent surf around launie area, will have a car to do some missions!

But if anyone is around this area and wouldnt mind doing a mission somewhere that would be sweet!

cheers
