Hi all,

Putting some thought into a trip to mexico and bahamas next january which will include some kiting.
The misses will also be in tow, so still have to be somewhere that offers more than an empty windy beach.

Looking at Playa Del Carmen/ Cancun in Mexico which looks to have the goods and a fair bit of info online, but i cant really seem to find to much on the bahamas.

Has anyone been kiting in the Bahamas and if so, which islands?
Also, any other tips or info about the area etc... would be great

Thanks

hey,

I would definitely go to Isla Mujeres which is close by. You can ride on the Northern end however it is a very small beach so will have to water launch.

Google Map it

Playa Del Carmen/ Cancun are ok to Kite it can get choppy when it is windy.

Isla Blanca (massive lagoon, waist deep) is accessible from both and you can get a lift from a few different spots.

How long are you travelling for?

Enjoy mate, Mexico is Epic!

Playa del carmen / cancun are full of giant all inclusive resorts. Maybe thats your thing, but if not as mentioned isla murjures has a much more chilled vibe. Also further south at Tulum theres prolly 3 - 4kms of cabanas (beach cabins) and further south from there is 50km of deserted beach. Youll need a car to reach that section but its paradise! When I was there in December it was blowing 20-25kts, 24 hours a day! You couldve kited from dawn till dusk.

Plenty of other nearby activities to keep the mrs entertained. Go diving/snorkelling in a cenote, mayan ruins, great bars and restaurants etc.

Enjoy!

Sweet, thanks for that.

That lagoon near Playa/cancun sounds cool. I found a company based at playa that does day trips. The mrs is keen to go to tulum for the ruins, so that that might work too.

Anyone kited in the bahamas? (or any other carribean spots, as we dont have any actual plans yet)

Don't know about Bahamas, but Mexico has a lot to offer.
Playa and cancun are too busy for my liking with huge resorts etc but Tulum was fun, Stay beachfront, kite straight out the front in the fun kickers.

Forget Isla mujeres for kiting, Stayed there for a month last May. Great place for fishing and diving but the kiting is crap.
Heaps of current around the island which was going with the wind.and the whole island is sharp rocks except one beach..
Theres only a small spot to launch and then its offshore with no way home if you f@#k up, this is in the trade S wind. It would be ok in a northerly.
Also lots of people like to swim in the tiny little area that has flat water out of the current but if you cut to far over there wind shadows...
I had a few sessions in this spot but not worth the effort. This is it in the pic.

Try Isla Holbox island! Heaps better, lagoon flat water!
