Hello Everyone,
We would just like to know if anyone has kitesurfed in the bay of deception bay?
Today we went down there and it looks like a really good spot - it is evenly shallow far out for hundreds of meters and has a good area to land and launch from.
We went there at low tide to see if there were any dangers around - but it looks exactly the same as the kiteboarding spot at Brighton near Sandgate. There seems to be more mud in the dbay area but nothing too crazy.
I have never seen anyone kitesurfing down there and it is always very windy. As we are very new to the sport - i guess we were wondering if there was a nasty reason no one kitesurfs there or maybe you are not allowed to kitesurf there?
I have attached a map to this post so you can clearly see where i am talking about...sorry for the dodgy map :) but you get the idea.
Please have a look and any information will be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks in advance guys!!
Thanks Sandgroper.
Yes thats what the green says....when i uploaded the pic, it went all strange like that.
Green text - "Safe - Shallow - No rocks. This is a huge clear area and you can go out a lot further north and east of this Green Pat spot".
Hopefully someone has ridden there before - or knows why people dont ride there.
(or maybe its an untapped resource :) )
Sandgroper - i was thanking you for pointing out what was written in green - again, thank you - if i was not clear before?
This area is in QLD.
Hopefully someone here will have more info on this spot.
Looking on Google earth, It looks as though Sandgate would work in a few more wind directions than deception bay. The part you've coloured would very often have the wind coming over a fair bit of land first, meaning its going to be turbulent and work less often than at Sandgate. (As a guess, I've not kited there).
I'd ask Padi and the boys from Surf connect for their local knowledge. they are always at Sandgate. Padi is on this forum and is always friendly and helpful.
Thanks Smed :)
Today - we waited allllllllllllllllllll day for the wind to pickup, sitting at sandgate/brighton with the blackberry, constantly refreshing the seabreeze charts hoping for a change in wind speed...but at about 3pm we gave up hope and left for home.
We dropped into this area at deception bay (to take the dog for a swim) - and at about 4pm the wind picked up alot, right in front of our eyes. When we arrived there was no sign of wind - and with no warning it just started slamming in.
No one was replying to this post who had ridden here before so we said 'stuff it' lets give this place a shot. We whipped out the 9m Cab Crossbow and moved out (our first solo trip by the way after our single training lesson).
Tide was way out and there was no one else around.
After all this i guess its time for me to let you know that while this place could support a good ride with the same wind direction you need at brighton/sandgate - there are a few issues that make this not such a good spot.
As you get out deeper - as the tide goes out - it seems to get muddier and muddier + there are small rocks in the mud up to about the size of golf balls. When i was jumping around with the kite in the water i managed to cut my foot open during a landing - nothing too bad. I came down from a pop, into the water, hit the sand but my feet kept going down into the mud with enough force to crack skin on those rocks and land me with mud 15" up my legs.
So the killer for this place is the mud. If the mud was not so bad here this would actually be quite a good spot - its really shallow for a very large area just like brighton. There are only rocks when you start getting into the deep mud but besides that there are no rocks.
If anyone else ever wonders if this would be an ok spot - hopefully they read this before trying. Its not recommended.
We will see you SEQ riders at brighton next time - there is no other spots around the north side. Might try the mouth at Coloundra next time there is good wind - last time we were there a few months ago on the jet ski....it was the perfect conditions for kiteboarding! Crystal blue water, good 15knt, no one on the south side of the mouth and small but useful swell
Cool. Have fun and stay safe. stuff it, give it a go is probably a bad idea unless supported by experienced kiters. Hope everything goes well for you. I'd consider kiting with experienced kiters for a while whilst getting started. Just to make sure you've considered all the possibilities. I did a lot of kiting by myself first up but found I learned way faster and quickly adapter safer practices by kiting with those more experienced.
I think your right Smed - even though its busier we like the kiting crowd and know it would be a lot safer. Would have gone out at brighton but the wind only picked up when we left and i was really keen to find out why no one used this spot.
We don't want to get in the way while developing skills - but hopefully the 'pros' are understanding enough.
