This board has an internal crack/delamination that has propagated to the rail edge. I can grind out the material down to where the crack originated (I hope) but what type of filler should I use so that it won't react with the material in the board. Araldite perhaps?...Thanks
Looks minimal.
You could heat some epoxy so its thin.
Dribble it in.
Clamp it closed.
Sand off when cured
For an immediate fix use superglue.
You can chuck backing soda on the superglue once clamped. It will cure immediately and you can sand and ride immediately.
PS clean out the crack first with meths, ipa or acetone. Wait for it to dry before applying epoxy/superglue.
I couldn't bring myself to applying a topical treatment knowing that the cracks still there, so I've ground the crack out down to the base (8-10mm deep).
I don't know if a delamination of the wood core had caused it, but from the look of the picture above it appears to have come from the inside out. The cracks inside the heel area on a straight piece of the board so I would assume the load is much less than on the tips...I'm confused as to why it would crack here. If it was a delamination I thought the epoxy would be strong enough to hold it together.
So, now I need to fill it should I use small layers of epoxy (could be a pain) or will one big blob be ok to place in there?. This stuff gets hot when it sets doesn't it?
All you need is epoxy resin, solarrez cures in sunlight/UV best stuff since sliced bread, sand prep and fill with epoxy and then walk outside into sun the stuff sets, I tested it and the first mistake I made was doing it outside the stuff started to set on the way from the tube to the board......!
Prep board/crack then work out of the sun to get nice fill. Step outside and boom.....Best to leave overnight after it hardens and sand to shape.....

Now you must fill with epoxy. I would also add chopped up bits of glass or carbon fibres to as well.
All fixed.
One of the guys I work with had some leftover resin from a patch up on his boat, so that's what got used.
I couldn't tell how far the crack went into the timber but it was less than hairline width when I'd filled the cavity, so fingers crossed another crack doesn't appear somewhere else on the rail.
Didn't see any need to add glass/fibres as there's none in the rail.
