Looking at getting a custom board made. Loved the 2008 Nobile skim, found the airush skim too small and a little bit loose- same with riding a standard Zap skim. Currently riding a kipuna and a Cabrinha nugget. Nugget struggles upwind but want something in a similar shape I think maybe with the rail of the Nobile skim.

2 questions- if you were designing a skim what would you do ? shape, size, construction, reasons ? and secondly has anyone tried kiting on an old knee board as that is a similar outline to what I think I want to try.

Cheers

Back the truck up a bit.

What conditions do you want the board to perform in? What do you want out of the board? that will determine how you make it.

In which case I look at the paipo/shinnister shape. Except I'd bring the length back for 145 or shorter . Keep the wide tail.
Run a light tail rocker of 30mm and pull the nose rocker up to 70mm.

The wide rear and low tail rocker will give you good light wind performance. The higher rocker and rounded front will give you reasonable chop munching and wave riding ability in the light winds.

Width no more than 45cm.

Looks nice- what model is it ? Rode something similar from LF ages ago but it was super heavy ! I think the rocker is going to be wrong on any boards designed for behind a boat but I am keen to be corrected

Not sure what model it is but yes it is heavy and hurts when you pop shovet into your shins. But having it heavy is good cuseway it dosnt get blown away from under your feet wile airborne. There is a bit of rocker in the nose but I use it in light wind. I'm happy to sell it for $200

Check out the shinn water bird, the is some great video footage of it being rode in flat to surf, now not in production so getting one here may prove difficult, still some circulating in the uk though,

Here's the result of years of testing kite with skim:

I have owned and tried numerous kite-specific skim boards including nobil skim, airush skim, Liquid force skim and liquidforce skim fish. The best one i've found is the north skim.

Here is a home made skim board we build from ply wood, works a treat.
