Has anyone had real experience of kiting in these southern Indonesian Islands. The southern coasts are definitely exposed to the SE trades from May to October so there must be some epic kiting spots. I am looking for waves and trade winds 15kt plus. I know of Lakey's Peak near Amangati, and have heard people kite there but frankly with the geometry of it, that spot looks to be blowing too offshore to be a safe spot to kite.

Plus the rest of those islands are totally flukey as well and not really worth your time

Lakey's gets real wind. 7m some days. I have Been there a few times. Its not really the trades. In fact it is during September and October when the trades start to die off that it is at its windiest. Its exceptional wind [for Indo] is based on a thermal anomaly rather than the trades. A bit like WA the windiest days start with a good morning off shore and then as the heat builds inland forming a low pressure over the centre of the islands. The large inlet behind Lakey's that goes well up past Hu'u channels the wind up to the mountains and in that inlet the wind speed is often 30kts plus. Conversely as you travel South east from Lakey's to cobblestones and beyond the wind gradually peters out. Trades may bring wind in their own right but prevent the thermal from building effectively. It seems that a NE pressure pattern over the islands brings the best wind.

Lakey's is a bit of a mission to get to, and there has been some chat on the surf forums about it being a potential site for a terrorist attack as the best and largest hotel is owned and run by non Muslim Balinese and staffed by non Muslim Floresians and Sulawesians, and fundamentalist ideology has been on the rise on this Island.

I have spoken to many people who go to Lombok, Kuta seems a good base. The trades are reliable through June, July and August. Gets windy much more so than Bali. Some other spots further EAST. Good waves. Again gets thermal reinforcement as the day warms. Unfortunately no longer gets a direct flight from Perth but still hoping to do a trip there.

Sumba - now that would be a real mission. Tourism there is rudimentary . Transport difficult. Best known for an exclusive private surf resort on the South coast, The blurb reads 'Nihiwatu was born of a vision to protect and preserve the unique culture and empower the local communities to support themselves and their families and give them the opportunity to improve their own lives' well maybe. The wind tends to be on the other end the South East. I think Felix Pivec went there a few years ago but failed to score for one reason or another, or at least that is what we were told. . Maybe it is still waiting to be discovered.

... not making excuses but last year was worst year for wind overall and has been better previous years. I've noticed that the trade winds have been coming in later and later each year,,,, dunno why, global warming, who knows why?? Last year was first time I had 3 days off with no kiting where as previous years I managed every day.

Anyway, just saying is all.

+1 for Southern Lombok.
Kited Kaliantan last year. Used 9,12and 17m. Huge lagoons for flat water fun, good surf for both kiting and surfing or SUP.
Friendly locals too. Is quite remote so no shops or tourist crap which suited us perfectly.
Highly recommend.

We we stayed at Heaven on the Planet. Not cheap but wow, what a place. Ekkas surf break right in front and about 20mins to Kaliantan in resort supplied jungle jeep. All food included, 4$ 1litre Bintang and a view to die for. Free boat to surf, snorkelling, free boardhire. So nice.

Thete are sone real budget places too. Try Kaliantan Paradise Bungalow retreat. Real cheap, real basic but right on the kite beach.
