I have found that using a gath helmet I can then jam any sunnies on my face without the need for strapped or surf specific sunnies, even the biggest stacks are not a problem. The question then is, with my age around the 43 mark and my sight not getting any better, which sunnies would be the best for the glare and spray?

Cheap polarised sunnies. Polarised to cut the glare out of the water, and cheap, so if you lose them...

Blue Eye Squids.

Love them. Great for killing glare - in fact I wear them driving. Seriously sensational eyewear for kiting.

Best $80 i've spent for something kiting related.

You won't regret it.

Thanks guys,

Checked out the blue eye squids & they look great.

I'm more interested in preserving my sight, so quality is important.

Because I wear a lid I will never lose them, haven't lost my current sunnies and they are just servo sunnies I've had for about a year!

Polarized Seabreeze Sunnies all the way baby!

Last season, we had a couple of pairs delam, and once told, we instantly sent a replacement pair of sunnies, free of charge.

I like the Seaspecs, although one of my pairs is starting to delam (2 seasons).

They sell them 3 for 2 as well, and with the AUD being strong at the moment, thats $40 a pair. Gold.

I have owned Sea speces(all 3 pairs), Jublio, dirtydog and other water specific sunnies but I recon a $25-30 pair of polarized sunnies from a caltex servo is just as good. - even better. There is a large variety and you can just use one of those neoprene sunglasses straps.

When you get them all scratched up you just get another pair.... cheap!

Number one tip is to buy that Oakley Water jacket replacement hydrophobic solution and use it on your cheapies.

I agree with all that - water beading and fog up due to sunblock and hair grease accumulation on the lenses usually means that the lenses are obscured after an hour of kiting and it's completely irrelevant how much you have spent esp as some of the most expensive glasses are not even polarised.

Having tried all the sunnies i use a hat. What a revelation. You can tilt your head down and the brim keeps all the glare out and when you jibe to come back in you can look up and see. Also saves a lot of sun damage to the face and keeps your head warmer in winter. Even better if youre losing your hair. FCS do a good one that I have backed up with a neck string as it occasionally gets blow off by a big wave.

I now notice most of the older blokes at scarbs starting to wear hats now. Go the hat!

Only downside is reduces your window of view and other kiters can blindside you more easily

Laurie,
I just lost my seabreeze sunnies in the briney while doing a stylish faceplant
Do I get another pair under warranty?

Sent you a PM.

There are lots of brands of good quality safe sunnies available, and I went once down the road of the bunnings/caltex sunnies .. they're all nice and "cheap" and work well while you're just putting araound, but once you do the above (a faceplant), and end up with the lens in your eye socket .. you quickly realise how a "cheap" or "inappropriate for watersports" sunglasses can take your sight .. all for saving a couple $.

For me, it wasn't worth it.
