...and apparently it is football.
As a part of the nations minority, I can proudly say I have absolutely no interest in AFL whatsoever. However what sh!ts me in that even during the off-season footy dominates our media and is still shovelled down our throats.
To my not so unexpected surprise I opened the West Australian newspaper to page 3 to find the article below. With some of the world's best kiters participating in what is now one of the world's premier race events the media still takes the opportunity to reach out to the football fanatics and spend almost an entire article on one of its favourites.
Good on him for going in the event, but quite frankly I don't give a f#ck about his Dockers coloured kite; his previously fractured leg; where he grew up; or the fact that he was going to be at football training this morning. Additionally so, the two dominant photos were of him.
What a completely wasted opportunity to promote this event and to provide a true representation on the event and its ability to attract world class competitors and their performances.
Rant over.
Apologies for pic being rotated, photo was taken normally though uploaded this way.
Ben cousins too
His woo said 26 Mtrs that's a big high
Sept he was stood on the main road directing traffic to the event
Wouldn't surprise me if waksa were totally stoked on that kind of coverage, or even invited him to compete.
Treating kiting like a sport is not really my thing, but I expect they need all the exposure they can to grow these things. Now AFL on the other, what a game... wish I could still play!
My point is though - less mainstream media, less whinging, more kiting
As for benny, he'd be more likely to be found around broken windows in the Leighton carpark these days sadly...
It's not rocket science mate! How many people turned up for "our biggest event" maybe a couple hundred??
On a good day 80000 pay to see him,. It's no wonder he made the news!
Getting on the tv main news and p3 of the west would be pretty good publicity for the event i would have thought!
Yeh must admit my first reaction was the same. Then I thought, well money talks and bullsh1t walks. We live in a celebrity obsessed world, so its not surprising.
When I see evidence of our unhealthy obsession with celebrities, it confirms my suspicion that we are doomed as a species.
Nat fyfe does sound like a genuine character though so no disrespect there.
There is nothing unhealthy about people frothing over Nat Fyfe. The guy can boost six foot off the ground without a kite! And he's in the Dockers!
Hopefully an Eagle enters the race one year and he destroys them.
I want to know how to survive the silly season without stacking on the weight.
Too late! hahaha

Totally agree. So if the mainstream media mixes kite surfing with other "sports", should we complain - cry foul - not fair?!
Yeah, but it's a pointless argument.
At least it's coverage to some extent. I know all about "coverage" (bring it on Sibbo)
Not a footy fan at all, but talking to a mate that is a fan, explained that regarding L2L, even though he raced without a board in the wrong direction he still stood a better chance of getting a trophy....whatever that means
