In November last year a post about kiting up in Torres Strait kicked off: Kitesurfing > General > Kitesurfing in Torres Strait.
Would be very interested to hear from anyone who's kited up there – not looking to bust open anyone's secret spots, was looking at google maps & got thinking…
... lived at Thursday Island for 9 months years ago and wind was brilliant, water beautiful but some big water movement as the tide runs fast there and oh yeah, big friggen bities! I wasn't kiting then but it was always windy in the dry season but not so much in wet (ie November). From my memory exploring the place with my brother in a dingy, there are heaps of spots but you'd need a boat to get to them. Good luck!
cheers,
Robbie
Juddy,
Kited around Cooktown, and heard of guys who kite even further up, but after seeing a croc on the beach one morning debating a kite I decided to go fishing instead!
York Is (Massig) in the NE Straits is joined to Koddel Is by a sandbar about 2km long and it gives perfect butter smooth runs with prevailing SEwinds which blow constantly from may to oct and average 20 plus kn most of the time
I comercially fished up there for 20 years and found lots of great spots to windsurf but most of them you need a backup dinghy for the offshore wind
Also great surf at Bramble Cay in the the NE channel ,it's beyond the shelter of the reef and cops the ocean swell which wraps around the reef
Looking forward to going back there one day and do it all again with kite and it will be twice as good!
