Back for another year, the Redkite Charity Downwinder is now well established as one of the best days on the kitesurfing calendar. A great opportunity to do a fun downwinder with mates whilst raising money for the Redkite Charity! Participants meet at the Kiosk end of Bright Beach car park in Scarborough at 11:00am for event breifing, sign on and to take the bus down to Leighton which is the starting point. Fundraisers are free proving you have raised $50 or more or you can be a Golder Rider with the entire $100 fee going as a donation. You must be a KA/WAKSA member to enter.

First Prize for the most funds raised is a Lighthouse to Leighton Spot. You will require a PFD and flare as per the new rules. To register as a fund raiser go to Every Day Hero

WAKSA can you please clarify the part about "pfd and flare"?

I thought pfd is recommended if your less than 400m off shore and flares are required if you are more than 1km(not sure)...or is it the requirement is for the L2L then its just PDF? From my understanding of the entry form you receive the flares and the event is exempt from needing the EPIRB. just byo pfd.

With less than a week to go, it's good to see the individual fund raisers shaking the can through their networks - great work Marc Blais - so far there's just over $2300 in the kitty - www.everydayhero.com.au/event/WAKSA2014/top_ten

Forecast is looking ok at this early stage - here's hoping there's a huge turn out next Sunday....

Hey everyone,

The long range forecast is looking promising for Redkite this Sunday!!

Regardless of wind the prizes for whoever raises the most money for Redkite are still on offer! This includes;

1st Prize - L2L ticket!!!
2nd Prize - Kitestock 2015 ticket
3rd Prize - TBC

Great work so far there is over $3600 raised but there are a few days to go so keep at it!!

Red Bull are confirmed and will be down playing tunes and supplying refreshments plus we have an after party booked in at the Local Shack in Scarborough afterwards. A DJ (Melotyx) will be playing some tunes and it's looking likely that this might combine with the State Wave Titles after party so it should be a cracking afternoon of swapping kiting stories!!

Registrations are from 11am with the bus leaving at 1pm.

Apologies for the previous post, pfd's and flares are only recommended as everybody should be kiting within 400m of shore for this event.

So sign up to guarantee your spot on the bus and support this great charity in Redkite. Here's hoping for some wind and a great event! http://www.waksa.org.au/kitesurfing-events/downwinder/event/21-redkite-charity-downwinder

With only a few days to go, the registered fund raisers have managed to get to $3800 - www.everydayhero.com.au/event/WAKSA2014/top_ten - great work so far by these peeps.

Hopefully, those participating in the event this Sunday can push that figure out substantially.

Still pushing hard! Got a couple more today.

We actually met a family in Freo that are receiving support from Redkite at the moment, for their son who has cancer. It really makes a difference, just good practical day to day support through a difficult time.

Good news is my work will chip in $2 for every $1 I raise, so there's a multiplier too.

Feel free to chip in and it'll get tripled! : waksa2014.everydayhero.com/au/jim-mccluskey

Wind is looking sweeeet for the Redkite downwinder tomorrow!!

Over $7000 raised so far which is amazing and Redkite will be stoked. There is only one day to go so keep the donations rolling in.

There is still room on the bus so it doesn't matter if you haven't registered for fundraising. Register on the WAKSA website, pay $100 (all money going to Redkite) and join in on the day.

Ian Young is back from his epic adventure up the coast and has kindly offered to present the prizes to the fundraising winners. He will also be about at the Local Shack for the afterparty so get down to Scarbs for a beer and a yarn.

Over $8000 now with only a few hours left to fundraise!! Awesome effort everyone.

Even if you haven't been fundraising and still keen to participate in the downwinder today, come down to Brighton and make a $100 donation to Redkite and jump on the bus.

The wind is already up, there's a few white caps already, so it should be a great downwinder. First in best dressed to get the remaining spots on the bus.

Don't forget after party at the Local Shack from 5/6pm tonight!!

Fantastic day guys. Thanks to WAKSA for organising such a smoothly run day, which meant we made a real contribution to Redkite.

My wife took a stack of photos, up to and including the awards by one Ian Young. Rather than go through and edit, we'll just throw them all on here:

20 crew did the DW in sensational conditions, with only one or two crashing the WAKSA wave comp

once again, we've done a really good job for Redkite, with approx $8400 collected via the everydayhero site.

Big thanks to the WAKSA volunteers for putting the event together - Darren & Leigh & the rest of the crew in yellow - great work all round.

With exceptions for Dusta
