Ey guys,

just wondering what kind of waterproof phone case you use (if you do) when you are out kitesurfing. I'm trying to sneak out from the office from time to time and, at least, I would like to be available on the phone. So, waterproof case and waterproof headphones? I have got a Samsung Galaxy S4.

Thanks!

I use a lifeproof case for an iPhone 4 that is waterproof. Not sure if they do Samsung but worth a look.

Does anyone actually take calls while kiting?

I keep my car keys in an Aquapac - I've had one for years and it works really well. They do have sizes that can take a phone. They are waterproof to 5m depth, so fine for kiting.

Hi
I purchased maybe 4 years ago of Ebay a hard plastic case which has soft silicon face to touch controls on face of iPhone or face
of iPod.
Has internal earphone connect which I connect an old iPod to waterproof headphones
Been using this every time I kite for music. That 4 years everyday.
end of the day,one day it MIGHT leak so you take that chance.
Hard to find durable headphones and now just super glue up wholes in cheap iPod earbuds which seem to last just as long as brands
like H2oaudio.com etc.
looked at ebay cheap plastic pouch type but wouldn't put anything you value in them, dodgy seals to keep water out

I use my phone's GPS to track my kiting on Strava.
This is what I do.
Glad wrap phone, place inside plastic air-tight bag, push air out, place inside another air-tight bag. Done!

Yes for Paqua - I use this in combination with my super watertight old phone (Sony Xperia Active). I have it for 3 years, yes magnetic strip if falling out by now, but still 99% watertight. You might get drop or two inside. They certainly charge as it was made in Australia, which is highly doubtful :-( So at least they keep the profits here :-) Check their 20years old website www.paqua.com.au/

I've been looking at getting a phone case / bag, and a waterproof bluetooth speaker that will allow me to crank some tunes while I'm out.

Anyone done this before?

I've seen plenty of snowboarders have this setup but they can just have it all in a small backpack. can't quite figure out how / where to secure it to myself to ensure I can hear it, it doesnt get in my way but I wont lose it when I crash.

Have found the lifeproof case to leak, not really waterproof in my experience.

Hi,

I grabbed a "Sea to Summit" waterproof Pouch from Paddy Palin. It works brilliantly and cheaper than the PAQUA. You can use the phone through the plastic and it is seathrough both sides...There is one that has a waterproof headphone jack too...Dont know about the bluetooth speakers though.

I have had my iphone completely submerged for about 10 minutes while I bodydragged back to shore the other day :-)

Yeah i am interested in this too.

Plan to GPS track my every session (i am beginner) and share later for anyone interested in statistics (i know i was searching for progress statistics before i bought the equipment). Well, for now, ill get 1-2 cheap pouches "waterproof" to 5 meters and 1 "more quality" to put everything in.

Any better ideas?

Also, i know its off topic, but(!), i tested couple of sport apps for GPS tracking. The 1 with best precision in my opinion is Geo tracker. If u have more suitable apps, would be lovely if u share :D

Happy kiting!

I cannot believe people are comfortable with taking their expensive mobiles into the sea is it really worth the risk?

Just leave it in the car and get a gps watch for tracks

No, expensive phone goes in the car, used old smartphone, capable for my favorite app installation with costume bigger battery than stock, goes into waterproof case + if any emergency, i can call anyone at any time since nobody likes watching you kite for 5 hours and doing nothing.

Most of the spots (non popular) are not so near civilization (unless u have at least 20HP motor boat) and my whole country has less then 100 kiters. We have 1200 islands btw, do the math. And pls don't preach me it's not smart to go kiting alone, i know that already :D

Not all countries have tone of spots and tone of kiters.

:D:D

WHY WHY WHY WHY....

I go kitesurfing to get away from the BLOODY phone. You guys a friggen NUTS.

Even if I am doing a downwinder I just ask a passer buy if I can give them some money to text my missus to pick me up.

Usually they are cool and just text for me, or I organise a time for her to get me. or leave my car at the end of the downwinder.

NO ONE WANTS TO SEE YOUR GPS ONLY YOU. I dont even think professional kiteboarders use phones while kiting for training.

I dont use my phone in the snow at all and I have ridden a lot overseas, PHONES FREEZE THEN THEY ARE STUFFED.

Sorry Rant Over.

I agree with you, but GPS is on almost everything these days. Most races I've witnessed you see guys with GPS watches and all sorts of tech, goPros, etc. It's very common.

Why would you want to be interrupted by work, just cut away early and ignore the phone.

You can't really track progress on a kite with a gps imo. The metrics you gauge a session by aren't really numbers but rather the level of how stoked you are once you come off the water, or for beginners how little walking you did back up wind.

Just so you guys know and to save you having to buy a new phone. When something its rated to say 5m waterproof that's not, "if I crash my kite and the phone hits the water as long as I don't go below 5 meters ill be fine" because that is not how it works....

That 5 meters is simply a pressure rating so what it is saying is under ideal conditions you can take that waterproof pouch 5 meters under water without any additional forces on it.

roh x g x h Pressure under 5 meters of water is 1000 x 9.81 x 5 = 49050Pa

Now assume you are 75kg and you fell from a height of half a meter onto your phone.

E=M x g x h 75 x 9.81 x 0.5 =367.9

F = E/s 367.9/0.5 = 735.75N

Now P= F/A Assume the phone case is 10 cm by 5 cm so area is 0.005 m^2

P= 735.75/0.005 = 147150 Pa

147150 / 49050 = 3 therefore if you weighed 75kg and you fell half a meter onto your phone in its 5m waterproof case you would exceed the limit of the case and would in fact need something rated to 15m waterproof, but thats only half a meter. If you were to also factor in how fast you were going laterally you would need something really waterproof.

I found this out the hard way when I went wake boarding with a camera waterproof to 10 meters. One big stack later and I wondered why it didn't turn on.

I had an idea for this.
Your phone connects to a light on your car roof which flashes when the phone rings.
Green light for friends, Yellow Light for Business, Red Light for Wife.

Exactly that.

I do want "mileage" for walk of shame, i do want to see am i going faster or slower on different wind, "upwind drive" differences on various winds (it draws trails on map) and all that little stuff i would like to see on "paper" that don't matter. Yes, i am still bodydraging and i am far from upwind but i would really like to see the numbers and routes. Written history some might say :D

Works on my bike (and running sneakers) pretty good.

I really don't see other tacking option (cheap enough) than 2-3 waterproof pouches and old smartphone :)
I am sure (i really am) it will get boring pretty soon but, till then...
