I was wondering if anyone has done any wave kiting in the area Oct/Nov? Would appreciate any tips on offer...

We are looking flying from Canada to Southern Baja in Mexico or possibly Peru. Want to do a trip that won't chew through the coin. So hard to sift through all the information on the net to get accurate information on costs and conditions. I get the feeling that the resorts like to show their 'best' photos.

cheers,

rez

Hey rezza. i heard they have now limited the number of kiters ( to like half a dozen or something)at the main wave in peru- and i think you have to be staying there at the camp in front of the wave. i could be wrong but thats what i heard. hope u guys are having a good trip. yeww

Rez - how are ya???

I surfed Chile, Peru and Mexico a couple of years ago (November) and brought my 6m with me.

Didn't kite Chile although I heard there is a place an hour out of Punta De Lobos (I think) where we stayed that has epic cross-off conditions. Never saw it myself cause we too rooted from surfing all day. Talked to a windsurfer who's come to WA a fair bit for wave riding - he claimed it massively.

Peru:Definitely check out Pacasmayo - the point is a left that will break for 7-800m on a good swell. Cross-off although the wind comes off the land...really strange but if you get 100m past the point, the wind drops 5 knots - crazy, a little gusty. Long, long walls...rate it more than Tombies for sure. We had 2 really good days here - super clean waves and no crowds apart from the lone local windurfer.
Definitely head to Lobitos 6 hours further north - 2-300 people in town, no shops - just surf and if the wind gets up - kite. Theres 4-5 wavs within 1km, 3 cross-off in a seabreeze.
If the swell gets above 3-3.5m, go to Chicama - wave breaks for 1300m - no sections. There's supposedly a bus that takes people back to the start but the swell dropped the morning we got there so it was a little small. Surf only.

If you're really adventurous, hire a car. On the bus ride back to Lima, we saw at least 8 point breaks in the middle of nowhere absolutely pumping. Heard that you need a security guard with you as you'll probably have everything stolen.

Only surfed just outside of Tijuana for a couple of days so can't tell you about Mex.

Bring a wetty. And be prepared to paddle. And don't leave anything lying around - everyone steals in Peru. Be prepared to pay at least $400 getting boards in and out of Peru...it's actually cheaper to live in the country than it is to get boards in and out.

hey Rez.In the airport in Chile at the moment. Been in peru for 7weeks. Started out at pacasmayo, about 10hrs bus ride north of Lima. (great long left wave, beach can be a bitch to launch off, lot of rocks, but wind most days, left to right, cross off) If your on a buget u can stay in town at the surf hostel named duke (they pronounce it du-ka) THink its $5 or 10 a night. But for $35-40 u can stay at el faro hotel overlooking the beach. Not exspensive to live in pacasmayo,

and deff one of the longest and best left you'll ever kite. If u surf , Chicama (longest left in the world is 1hr south by car). Wind there to offshore to kite, and u need a big swell for that to work. Got a bus up to a place called mancora, thats there resort town. Swell spose to start around oct-nov. But 1/30hrs south is a place called Lobitos, great wave when swell up and wind , much the same as pacasmayo. Acomm can be from $5 up to $45 in the best place. If there no waves not much of a place to stay at, and if your travelling with your girl and she doen't kite or surf, shes going to be bitchin. But if you get lobitos on , deff a gret wave to kite (easier to kite then pacasmayo). Well only got another f-ing 5hrs to wait for next flight, but hope this helps u. Look up kitesurfing in pacasmayo and lobitos on internet and you'll see what the waves look like...cheers tez

Hey thanks for the tips guys!

Sorry for the delay in my response...my old laptop decided it was time to die pretty much right after I made the post!

Sounds and looks amazing down there! From what you have said it looks like I am on the right track with the towns and spots I've been researching. Pacasmayo looks sweet!

TOD- ha ha no not one of those types. Pretty good with roughing it as long as I can get in the ocean. Was the final cost of your 7 weeks expensive? We are on a shoestring.

Turtle Hunter- Too many choices can be a curse for an indecisive person like me!!!! (hope all is well for you guys)

hi rez, cost for me, probably up a far bit more because was staying at the more exp placers. Met a guy in lobitos and he wanted to surf and kite pacasmayo and i told him about duke hostel (du-ka). Emailed me back and said great place to stay and cheap. Its near the beach, but where u surf and kitesurf is about 3kms away. Can set up your kite gear around from the main beach (wind straight out the front of where u will stay drops right off because of the hill at the side. Or can get a moto taxi to the point for about $1.50 and just take the gear to kite with and get the taxi guy to drop the pump back at hostel.Don't leave anything on the beach when u kite because it probably won't be there when u get back. When comming in at the main beach in town keep the kite high and race in quick.(wind drops right off) Has a big pier at the end off beach and if u put kite down and can;t get back up , thats where it's heading. (2 guys kite's while i was there got trashed in the pier) UP at lobitos is a easier wave to kite , but doesen't get as much swell as pacasmayo, has a good beach to launch off and is a great wave. The place has nothing there and if theres no waves nothing to do.But if u get it on deff one off the best kiting spots in peru. Try in there little town for cheap accomm. ( maybe only $5) Watch out for your gear, alot of thiefs in peru. If your getting buses down from where u are be ok to check out, stop at Mancora, the main bus stop (there resort town) , an 1.30 north of lobitos, and contact a mate of mine called Skip, (phone 969786020) he's an Australian guy who been runing kite tours for the last five years. NO's every spot and how to do it cheap. Just tell him u've been emailing me about the place and he'll put u on the right track on where to go and to stay in Mancora for cheap and other placers. Hope this helps u out... Cheers Terry
