What wheels do you have that gets you to all the good remote spots? I'm on the lookout for something with four seats, that goes good on sand and has room in the back for a couple of surfboards and a quiver of kites. 4x4 or or UTE that would fit a 6'4" surfboard in the rear tray.....
How much money do want to spend.
Any 4x4 will do the job with a bit driving skill and the right tyres and pressure.
Mitsubishi Delica's go surprisingly well on sand.
But then Unimogs go anywhere

THere is something very cool about a troopIe. Where is that shot taken - or is it a secret. I've got 5 days set aside for the drive home from exmouth in a few weeks to explore and try some new places, would love to give that a shot if it is en route?
Here's mine. Double cab 4wd automatic ute with central locking canopy and roof box.
I can fit all my kite gear in the back plus tent plus camping gear plus more people///. when there's stinky wet suit it doesn't stink the cab out. I can sleep in the back as well..... its awesome in the sand.
But your buddy can still get it stuck in quicksand!

Tray is 1.5m square in round figures. I can sleep on the angle which measures 1.9m. Went and bought a $50 foam mattress cut it to shape and boom! sleeping quarters.
Its a 2013 dmax.

Mmmm, like it. Makes sense. might be my next car after the mortgage busting magna station wagon 2003 gives up. 
had a delica, some car enthusiast had spent 25k on this thing, lifted, custom bull bar, racks, dual red arc battery, you name it...loved it man, miss it.
Sleeps 2 with elevator bed
Fully self contained
Solar and duel batteries
Diesel heater
Rear wheel drive
Not an off roader, but super comfy. Roof racks and pod coming soon.
Either these will do it. Brumby was 500 Suzi 350 :)
Can sleep in the brumby or under the Suzie if it's wet. Difficult to stop the Suzi!

I was at the Paris motor show years ago when they released the VW tourag with great fanfare. They set up this 4wd circuit and set off with all the press clicking madly. A little Suzi took off after it and completed the track behind, gave a couple little toots on the horn as it overtook the VW at the end. Was hilarious. 
My baby, In my opinion the best you can get.
Go anywhere, as in the photo I have the old DR650 on the back for those remote down winders.
Inside I carry all my dive gear, spear, fishing, camping, 3 surfboard, three kites and a twinny.
Still enough room for a cozy nights sleep for two people. Best part of all, cold fridge powered by the sun,.. happy days!!
Sube Forester, got some 4wd if ever needed, otherwise easy hwy cruising car-like handling.
I've got a Forester as well, although I'm sceptical how far in to the "off road" it could go.
Ground clearance when going over some soft sand I think will be its downfall.
Still for what I need and where I go, its perfect. Fold down rear seats gives more room that you need for 2 persons. All your gear can be inside, otherwise roof racks and gear on top and you could take 3 people.

Is that a Nissan patrol, 3ltr or 4.2, great units but 4.2 a bit thirsty,whats the 3.0ltr like on fuel?
Along way from good,.. about 14l/100.
Having said that I am running 35" Muddy's, its always loaded and I've done little to help the aerodynamics. I did do a few mods though to increase efficiency,. chip, exhaust etc but I'm a little dubious to the theory of getting more power and using less fuel.
I seriously don't mind paying for fuel though, I have a car which I know can get me anywhere and is as solid as a rock even with 333K of hard k's on the clock. A few extra buck in fuel but as I say I can get Perth to Exmouth without refuelling and with peace of mind not giving a f about the wild life sitting on a dollar thirty subbing red cans,.

The extra money you save on fuel for the 3ltr you will more than likely spend on an engine rebuild.
I posted on the thread below a few years ago some shots of my old Nissan Patrol (RIP) and why I liked it over the Troopy, which basically was that by having rear doors meant with the back seats out I could have easy access to the fridge (for food) on one side and Evakool ice box (for drinks) and have easy access to 4 or 5 kites wetsuits etc from the back and although it doesn't look like it in the photo shown there is plenty of room for sleeping on the double bed in the back.

The old Triton makes a pretty good beach bus. Vinyl floors mean you just brush the sand out for next time and with the 20K you saved over a hilux or ranger you can upgrade kites and buy some recovery gear
I've had a few short holidays in rural fishing towns along the WA coast this year and a lot of locals seem to have a toyota landcruiser of some description (arguments which model another topic).
here is a list of what the common specs are:
diesel, preferably v8 with turbo
2 fuel tanks for extended range
lift kit
muddies or at least all terrain tyres
bar work
LED lights

carpet is a compact and effective way of getting out of being stuck in sand. Does the same job as those orange things except cheaper and flatter so doesn't take up much room in the ute.
