G'day to all you central Queensland kiters. My wife wants to make a road trip up to Yeppoon April 7-13 and I don't want to miss out on any potential kite days at home in Noosa so I'm planning to secretly bring my gear along as I've heard there are a few decent spots up there! We'll see what the wind does but hopefully I'll get a few good sessions in. Is there a particularly good beach that would be nice for the wife and daughter to hang out on while I make some tacks in a SE?
- Michael
ahoy there, most beaches get the SE winds but main beach Yeppoon is easy for the fam, it has parks and shops, best of all I has a nice grassy spot to rig up.
mullumbin is the best in Yeppoon has long runs and you can kite over to the mouth of the cause way mouth for so flat water.
sandy point (4x4 only) is awesome on a run out tide, flat water. very strong current on big tides, if something go's wrong you will end up out to see, awesome spot tho.
hope this helps. we are all a friendly community of kiter's here in poontown lol
That sounds great, thanks for the good word Kemp!
What about Keppel Sands? Does it have flat water and nice camping? It looks like you could kite over there from Mulumbin?
Just be careful at Main Beach is the tide is high in a SE, the wind can get really gusty and the rock wall isn't too forgiving..
Keppel Sands is definitely kiteable and used to have a sandbar that gave you a bit of a pond but I haven't ridden there in years so not sure if it's still there.. You'd be able to do a downwinder from anywhere to Keppel Sands but you'd need a NE. Do you mean Keppel Island?
Kinka Beach also has a nice big flat water pond thanks to a sandbar but it's super shallow on low tide.
Thanks for those tips jleeee.
I did mean Keppel Sands so that answers my question.
I also looked up Kinka Beach and it looks nice! There is also a caravan resort close by which is an added bonus.
kinka is awesome as long as the wind is ESE or E. any more south and it has to come over the headland and it gets ultra gusty
Don't forget the Yeppoon Kite Festival is on this year as well over Easter holidays. Lots of guys on buggies and land boarding / kites.
Be mindful of where you park your car - beware of the cannon...
