Hi guys,
Just got out of surgery and begining to worry about when I can get back on the water.....Possibly still got morphine residue in veins as well so i realise it may be a "little" early.
Effectively had to have an incisional hernia repaired running down centre of stomach - 14 inches long. Caused by previous surgery.
My surgeon reckons a minimum of 3 months off the water...I nearly cried like a baby.
So, my question is, has anyone else had major surgery and gone back to kiting in less than 3 months or is it just a case of letting your body tell you when the time is right?
In the meantime - there will be a kite bitch available for use on the stkilda and altona beaches regularly until I may set sail into the land of faceplants once again!

broke back in three places, fractured skull, broke three ribs, had shoulder torn from socket and top end of humerous broken off..... 18mths off (non kiting injury)
broke arm at wrist (radial and ulna) and dislocated elbow in november, back on water in march (kiting injury)
broke wrist (scafoid bone, or as physio used to say when i was a kid skateboard bone due to the perdominance of skateboarding related injury) this end of sept beginning of oct just gone (kiting related injury)...
took a bunch of pain killers (initially) and since then a few h.t.f.u tablets, and have just kept kiting. bought a stand up paddle board to replace the surfboard as i still can't push up from prone...
probably gonna all catch up with me on the other side of fifty... but mehh, by then, if 2012 hasn't wiped us out, terminator replacement body parts should be readily available and well and truly be beyond version 1.0
got me some HTFU tabs already......
Digesics & Toradol. Gotta say though.....I miss the morphine already...I was seeing pink pussycats in the hospital room! I dont mean the nurses either :-)

Listen to your body man. I had major surgery on my leg after a pretty bad kiting accident. I broke the tib and fib and got internal bleeding. They were going to amputate but instead they cut the calf in half and folded it outside of my leg while it drained blood. They said it would be a year and a half before I would walk and likely never kite again. I waited 4 months before I went back on the water... (forever... pffft just goes to that docs will always lean on the mega safe side!!)
Dude, be positive and let your body get better first. Whats the point in hurting yourself again and having to wait longer from a half arsed injured kiting session.
Good luck!
Good to hear your on the mend Grog! I was starting to wonder what you were up to.
Not that i've ever had as serious surgery as that but i'd take it easy (notice i didn't say sit it out) until your body says it's ready to go again.
Perhaps i should have taken my own advice given i went kiting on Sunday at Altona with a lung infection. I'm regretting it now.
Take it easy and looking forward to seeing you out on the water again when your back up to fighting fit!
I waited 7 weeks before getting back into it. Had an abdominal surgery as well. Let's just say it plays up most when kiting & then I pay for it for nearly a week. Sucks but we must push through the pain. Just listen to your gut....when the pain gets bad enough that you have to stop & catch your breath....HIT THE BRAKES!!
