haha, was stirring the pot. Late on Friday looking into my computer dazed and poking some fun. I think Leo deserves a bit of it really.

If he made it, then good one. I'll eat my words Solid wave and nice pic.. been there a few times and not sure about lakey pipe being one of the heaviest waves in the world though. Only goes for a few seconds. How many heaviest waves are you counting.. like 5000?

... looks about what, 1 and half meters above him,,,,,,, 1m x 1m x 1m of water is 1000 kg, perched above his head, heavy enough me thinks,,,,,, or is that not how you measure it?????

Not sure what you want me to measure. It's heaviness or something? Haha :) Im only comparing to other breaks. Lpipe sure, can be "heavy" and I'm not doubting that sesh was "heavy". Using a kite to tow you into the bowl here actually makes it more makeable. Compared to paddling in.

Just funny claiming it as one of the "heaviest waves in the world". I can easily think of a couple of other breaks which are considered heavier. On the same island

... genuine question,,,, how do you measure or say a wave is heavy, is it how much water it throws over????

Yeah I reckon that's a good way to measure heaviness. Add how far it throws over, for how long, nature of the wave, shallowness and what the reef is like. Thing about Lpipe is it's only one section with a deep channel at the end. So make that one section and you're home free. With a kite you should be able to put yourself in the right spot almost every time. Theres heaps of waves around where there's more to deal with. Like multiple sections, some shut down at the end onto dry reef, some double up or have steps in the face, etc etc. They throw over just as, if not harder for longer with greater consequence. They make Lakey pipe seem relatively tame in comparison.

Check out the 2012 Teahupoo code red session.. that's heavy

... genuine question,,,, how do you measure or say a wave is heavy, is it how much water it throws over????

A heavy wave is both LARGE MEDIUM OR SMALL its the one you under estimate ,catches you out, trips you up, surprises you ,holds you down, bounces you off the bottom ,scull drags you for what seams an eternity, explodes around your body sending a sock wave through your bones, coupled with a pressure sensation that creates panic .............oh all in combination with how much breath you find yourself with or with out .............not to mention being unable to find the surface when its all foam and you know your on the surface trying to sux in your desperate first breath only to breathing in mist.........then coping another on the head..........
Planting your foot on the reef with out hesitation to get to the surface, getting back to your board exhausted, fked, fingered, dizzy ,hyperventilating ,dry reaching and having to spend a couple of days recovering ...........now you know it must have been heavy

Ps not to mention the wave that throws the board bk into your face ,twists you , breakes bones.

Finally being rolled , cocooned, and wrapped in your med strings.....................got to make any wave heavy.

Drag you out into the channel with an out going tide ond through a Lpeek right destroying your bladder and equipment

But its all about a bit of speed, hot halipinos and finding a way through the double bubble sections ,windurfing brought the idea of being able to drop in on the other side of the A frame .............the shot above is wicked and i fink he makes it,,, as its a short section and so so clean and true to its name sake, Oh its that or hit lip for aerial.......... this wave can compress spines,,,,,,,,, and or do all of the above so is it heavy

only one way to find out

More commitment = less heavy

Fk that was a rave and a rant .................

How "heavy" a wave or surf break is measured in much the same way as wave size is measured. That is extremely inaccurately and very much dependant on the experience of the person measuring it, how long ago it was and how epic it was back in the day, whether your trying to impress chicks, how many beers you've had, whether your talking to some starry eyed grommet or the hardened local charger, whether the surf media has got a hold of it etc. etc.

Looks like the kite is fairly high and the lip is about to land on the lines

Looks like the lip has some weight and density to it

What happens to to kite if this happens

Does the kite inadvently move momentarily

Guess the kiter would have to make an adjustment or two

i like the photos posted.if leo didn't make it he would now have reef rash as its only 1m deep at best at this spot. i have sat and watched the best riders in the world get 20sec barrels at this spot. would not recommend this spot to any one without lots of wave experience.YOU NEED TO MAKE IT OR IT HURTS.

like the pic of lackey peak, except wind blows one way and it aint that way

if you ride natural stance its all on your back hand witch makes it intresting.

I have been twice and both times first 3 days were 8-10ft. not for amateurs.
