Yes it is real. I arrived in Oahu the day after that incident and the whole kite community was buzzing with the talk of it.
Eric and I became friends and toured across Australia from Sydney to Perth soon after in my bus. He's a good guy and very quietly spoken and humble. He didn't want all the world to see that video and certainly didn't want the negative press that went along with it, especially considering it happened in a time of the sport's infancy when the "Bee Ay En" word was being thrown about even back then.
Eric is to be commended on keeping a cool head and controlling his 2002 kite with great skill in very unstable and dangerous conditions. Most modern day kiters wouldn't be able to kite on that kite nowadays. A little respect goes a long way!

Maybe there should be a sticky thread with all sorts of mess-up videos. Then you set a warning for the kooks, and the good Erik doesn't unwillingly litter every other thread.
Alongside with the hurricane Fey dude-into-building-crash video, which I refuse to post. 
It would also prevent beaches from over-crowding.
However for officials browsing this forum to find arguments for banning, this would help them.. trade-off.
That vid is the same deal as the moon landing.It didnt happen. It was done in a movie studio using a white backing. Very effective though...it fooled ...and still is fooling a lot of people.
I have never understood the angst over the repeat posting of the Eric vid?
Believe it or not - not everyone has been kiting since 02' and seen it.
If it bothers you just don't click on the vid (and don't bother taking the time to post on the thread that it has wasted your time

If you see dog turj on the grass you don't go ahead and step in it so that you can complain about the person that left it there do ya? You step over it and keep on cruisin.

EDIT: Psylor's on it - how kn funny is the lady/man hooting in the snow vid?! Thought it might be faked until that.. no-one's gonna fake a ladyhoothoot like that.
