Hi,
I moved 4 months ago from Cape Town to Perth and will be heading permanently to Sydney next week. Love wave riding and normally leave my kites when going to flat water spots ;-) Is it worth bringing my 6 and 9 meter kites (Ride directional / surfboard) or should I rather sell and upgrade to bigger size kites?
I will be working in North Ryde.... bit far from the beach. No idea yet where I will be staying, but arrive next week Wednesday in Sydney! Any tips on kite size (wind strength) and locations to live would be highly appreciated
Thanks,
Eugene
Hi Eugene,
Welcome to Sydney.
Mostly wave riding is done on the Northern Beaches (Longreef, fishermans, Narabeen, Palm Beach) unless you want to go south of botany bay. Trouble is wind on Northern beaches is not the best, particularly in NE wind is can be a handful of knots lower than the wind at the airport and Kurnell.
Size of kite depends on your weight and size of board, but if you are over 80, I doubt you will be able to make do on your smaller kites, I only get to use my 8 a couple of times a year (on the Northern Beaches) In my view you will need a 12 or 13 as your main kite, and a 10 as well, but depends on your skill and sizes.
Being winter now it’s mostly the gusty southerlies. If it’s off shore North West try Kurnell, probably windiest spot in Sydney, but no waves, just chop.

Wanda is sweet in the summer and winter. If you ride surfboards only you'll be happy with those sizes though I would add a 12m to your quiver (I know it's big but if it's the right kite it can still be fun in waves). Check out this vid I made of Rich, one of the locals. Filmed at Wanda.
Hi guys
Thanks for the insight. I am 76kg. Great vid by the way. All I need now is to buy a kite pump as there was absolutely no space for that in my bags.
I will working in North Ryde, but that should be close-ish to North Beaches. Oh - also - buy a car in the next couple of weeks to actually get to the beach!
Thanks again - hopefully see you on the water!
Cheers,
Eugene
I live at northern beaches too, at Manly Vale, 10 min from Long Reef, and almost always travel south of the airport. It makes difference, more wind there. Good wave spots, starting from the airport: Wanda (north part of Cronulla, Woodos - reef reachable of Kurnell Boat Harbour (need 4wd), further south few spots near Bulli and Corrimal, .... another 100km South Seven Mile Beach great for NE downwind).
Buy a 14m C kite, Get a twinnie and stay north of the harbor bridge.
Only kidding mate,
The further south you head from the harbor bridge the windier it gets.
Most crew around wanda ride 9m > 11m and ride all sorts of surfboards.
Wind can be 15knts - 30knts with 1-4ft surf and all in boardies and tshirt in summer.
come down and join in.
Yes flow are not wave kites and ozone reo is a wave kite James rides dice and loves them for waves neither of them dumped their kites in the water all day they just float
maybe the Flows are falling apart and the Reos haven't? Still Leo shouldn't be using Ozones if he is loyal to these Flow guys.
IT looks like it will be all time this weekend!!! IS anyone going??? I am reposting something I posted in another thread earlier.... really want to join someone or others for a kite tomorrow
Hi, I would love to join someone for a session (s) tomorrow. Especially if there is going to be waves and strong wind Originally from Cape Town and just moved to Sydney. I am in the St. Leonards area. I've got my 6 meter kite ready for action
I can try meet someone anywhere in Sydney, but if you are driving from St. Leonards area or nearby tomorrow... would be much appreciated. I will be buying a car in the next month

Just back from Tonga ready to hit the cold water again. Saturday should be awesome, Im hitting Wanda/ Cronulla at some point. Hope to see you out there, I'll flick you a text.
After 4 months in Sydney.... I found some gems. The northern beaches tend to be a bit light though with wind compared to Wanda. Also went up to Lake beach (near nora head) last weekend. Great spots.

The downwinder from Birdie Beach to Norah Head is also awesome. You can generally get a couple of runs in in an afternoon.

Thanks for the tip. Will def. check it out. What is the best conditions for that downwinder? I did a Palm beach to Manly on Saturday... it was super dodgy as the wind was a bit light (NE). We had radio's and a driver, but 2km out and the first 4km... you cannot come inland as the headlands block off most wind. I would only recommend doing it if you are very experienced with back up (boat, radio, etc.).
Ah... Birdie beach! I camped there a few weeks ago. Wind was too light, but it looks like an amazing (and safe!) downwinder from Norah head to Birdie beach - all sand.....
