I've been learning to kitesurf for a while and bought a second hand North Rebel with a 5 line system. From watching lots of YouTube videos about self landing, I am now quite suspicious that my lines aren't set up properly, as my kite doesn't respond in the same way that the YouTube videos do.
Basically, my two outer lines are fine and as expected. Then I have my "thick" line that connects to my chicken loop and depowerer, and I have my thin safety line (which I think is supposed to be my 5th line) that connects to my harness and runs through the middle of the chicken loop. The problem is that after about 4 metres, my thick line and thin line are tied together in a bundle, and then three lines come out of the knot (left, middle, right). This means that when I pull my quick release, my remaining line (5th line?) is controlling 3 lines. Is this correct?
I would have thought that my 5th line should be running freely, and the middle point on the kite should be directly connected to the 5th line/on my harness. Not that these three middle lines are all connected and can't be controlled separately.
I've tried to look up images online, but can't find anything that clearly shows what is going on. I also can't go to any kite shops as I'm currently in Mozambique and my Portuguese is non-existent...
Thanks in advance!
Here you go dude, I don't have a rebel but I do have a fifth element bar-I took some pics for you while I was tuning my lines. The pics run from furthest to the cl and the first one is of the threeway split after the safety is released (you are right the kite should flag out to one line not three) I'm going to guess the red ball has been attached after the metal ring at the split on your kite, anyway hope this helps.
No, your 5th should be free, not tied where they split
I'd, not use it as a safety risk, unless your willing to let it all go, plus it'll handle like crap I'd say set up as you discribe
Better getting an identical bar to copy the correct set up
Thank you both of you! This is extremely helpful. Looks like I might need to take a trip to South Africa to try and find the missing ring...
Where are you? If Perth I can let you compare to my north fifth element.
Should be able to buy stainless ring at boating store. Don't fly it until you fix it.
As WindyWander said^^^^^
We are in perth, we have pretty much all the spares, and can tune your bar if you are struggling
Toddy
Actually action sports will do way better job of it than me. I don't know the bar's from the last few years, was just trying to be helpful.
