Hi everyone, I'm looking at getting in to kite surfing.Live in Perth WA and would love to kite anywhere around Perth and especially down in the South West region of WA as well.

I've got some lessons booked in and am trying to gauge what sort of gear I need for a good beginner setup.

I weigh 63kgs, have a solid background in board sports such as surfing and snowboarding (but no sailing experience) and would like to get a used setup for under $1,000 if possible. Your advice on kite type, size and year model as well as any other relevant information on harnesses and boards etc would be great, thanks!

If you're after a single kite quiver and at 63kg you'll need either a 7m to 9m for Perth. The season will largely be over come April so get yourself onto the buy and sell section ASAP!

I've a 9m Union 2016 for $795 I'm about to list on buy and sell (it maybe a bit big for you) but there's loads of bargains on there.

Go newer than 2014 for the kite, make sure try the harness on and make sure the bar / lines you get are in good condition. Unwrap the lines and check the safety works and isn't jammed with sand/salt.

Ask your instructor what you need when you finish your lessons and then go to your local shop and buy it. You'll spend about two grand to buy new but buying privately is not for beginners. You just don't know enough about what you're looking at . Most shops have some second hand, outdated or ex demo bargains. Go cheap on the board, everybody loses their first one.

Or sit in a dingy downwind from Perth kiting beaches, you'll have a big choice or become an alcoholic through carton rewards
