G'day south aussie kiters.

I have a potential job opportunity in Mt Gambier, but know nothing about the place. I am wondering if it is a good place to live, bring up a family, and also what the kiting is like around there. Are there many good locations, flat water and waves?, and what is the wind like?
I gather there must be a fair bit of wind given there is a wind farm there. But what are the seasons. Is it like nsw with the main kiting season in summer with regular seabreezes, with a bit of kiting(battling) in winter when storms come through? and what strength wind should I expect?

I'm guessing the water gets pretty cold down there, are we talking steamer in summer/dry suit winter?

I know I've asked alot of questions but I don't know where else to get this info. Thanks in advance

Hey can't say much about the kiting but started my working career around that way (20 years ago) & still know people there. Introduce yourself. Very friendly & welcoming, but you always have to make the first move. Up side is you will make friends for life!

Hey, i grew up on a farm near beachport and have been to The 'G' plenty of times. And i know many familys which have worked and brought up families there. I dont have much else to comment on the lifetyle of mtg but for the wind, the season is deffinetly summer and if you can get down to beachport/lake george (1 hour drive) then thats your best bet but you also have carpenters rocks and port mcdonald.

I winter it is always good form to have a smaller kite, there is always wind about, but can range from 15-35 knots very quickly and can be quite dangerous. The other thing is buddies, even though i have been kiting over 5 years now i never go kiting by myself anywhere on ocean in the SE. that is say lake george is pretty safe and when i mean by myself i always want at least someone watching me just in case..

I think i will be working down on the farm all over summer and kiting a fair bit so if u need any more advice hit me up
Pete

Very cold even in summer. But you have kingston, Beachport and robe close by which has some good conditions.

Robe has one of the biggest kite surfing comps in SA each year over easter, with a huge turn out and massive party.

If you find yourself there in January, come down to Kingston Long Beach for the Australia Day Looong weekend 22-26 Jan - there will ba a big crew camping on the beach for kitesurfing, mountain boarding and kite buggying.

G'day Beennie,
We have heaps of great spots to kite both flat and waves.
Wind, usally no shortage of wind down here, but like anywhere we have our light days.
I'm 88 kg and 7 > 11 are my go to kites 60% of the time.

Yeah, it gets a bit cold but that usually brings wind.
Mean temp through summer would be 25 degrees. Have plenty of 30 plus days, best thing it cools down at night.

Summer sea breeze are S/E 15 > 20knts. springer suit.
I kite all year round, don't need a dry suit. 3/2 steamer, hood & booties in winter.
Winter has heaps of 30 knots + days. N/W

We can drive on our beaches down here hence the quad in the advatar.

We can kite every wind direction with in 50km radius.

Beachport and Robe are only a stone throw away.

Mate, to live here you need heaps of toys, very laid back town.
It's a great place to bring up the tin lids.
Not many stop lights either

I've kited and windsurfed every state in Oz and I'm pretty happy to get back here.

PM if you want more info.

Haak
