I haven't heard of any events but even worse: we've lost our wind. Water has warmed up and wind is swinging around to the east (s to se during season). I get the distinct feeling our season is over early after starting late. Bummer!
Did windswell run the Port to low isles race this year? I don't recall hearing about it, not that it would have been much use to the OP, but just on events.

Had a blast btw at Yorkies Knob. Great spot, but I have to say not as good as Townsville. We're spoilt here with flat-ish water, not too deep and the winds are more direct on-shore and not so cross-shore like in Cairns. The lagoon end was awesome though.
Townsville is more consistent I think but gets pretty boring not really flat water and not really any waves yorkeys gets flat water at the creek and gets some small waves think can get more kites in at Townsville but definitely not better
Done many downwinders when i lived in Cairns. You basically get a few mates together and just pick a random beach north of cairns and then a second random beach and just leave a car there. Because it has so many beachy subvillages its ideal for that.
But you obviously need to know a few people up there.
