Hey, fair chance I may be moving to Brisbane/gold coast area. Can anyone please fill me in with how much kiting I can expect throughtout the year?

Moving from adelaide, which pretty much has nearly all year kiting (2-4 times a week on average over a year).

How is the winter season? Wind strength and reliability of summer seabreezes?

Thanks for as much info as possible.

Not much at all during winter. The occasional gusty westerly through southerly. Generally decent from sept through April, give or take. Expect 15-20 as average And similar regularity to what you're used, though not unusual to have 5 days in a row followed by 5 days of nothing.

BB is spot on, if you wanna kite move to Mackay, houses are cheap as chips and there is no traffic
no waves either though...

Probably end up around sunshine coast actually. Really looking forward to getting into some decent waves (with kite). Winds probably a little lighter than i was expecting, but on a surfboard that amount is fine. Plus im planning to get into foilboarding this summer.

Biggest kite is a 12. Guessing good to have something bigger? I weigh 76kg.

My biggest kite was an 11- from Perth.

Having lived on the Sunny for a little over a year, you really need a 13 or something bigger as there are plenty of yellow arrow days.

I am travel anywhere between Brissy and Cairns, and I've seen just about every spot to kite. The BEST spots are on the Pacific side of an island like Hamilton Island. Woah there is wind there!
But for most of us, the best places are those facing the trade winds (E-SE facing). Forget spots between you and an island, as the winds wrap around these things and are either not there (wind shadow) or are too gusty.
Winds (as in any decent wind) are on and off between 15 to 22knots. Hardly ever I've seen a 25knot + day in QLD.
So yeah a 12m is about the minimum around here. Take a 14m or bigger if you can

Bro did you stop in at Yeppoon? I'm calling it best spot in Australia! (for flat water). Like the pond but 20x bigger

I had a 15m best ts last year. Got me out on the water the same amount of time as an 11m but you had much more fun in the wind you had.
Last year we had 25knot seabreeze most afternoons. Definitely not as strong as the cold wind your use to tho

I'm in Hervey Bay, so in the shadow of Fraser Island. during the decent months I'm probably out 3 days a week on average. Water is flat, I'm 83kg and fly my 10m 80% of the time. I have a 12m and only fly it when I have to. Most of the locals fly 12's and the vast majority of the time, when they're on 12's, I can get out on my 10. If the wind is that light that I needed bigger than my 12, I'd rather do something else. I had a 14m slingshot td years ago But flew it twice before selling.

Mate, if I had my own company I would hire you. Sicko moves Kemps. And what a great spot you have there. I have no idea now why I would even think of going to Bali, when we have this stuff right here in Oz!

What times of the year are good to visit?

Just the usual SE qld trade winds from oct through till March or so. That spot works on every wind direction North, east, south and west, straight E is my fav. Tide is the next most important thing after the wind, we have 4m tides so you need to get the right side of the tide depending on what direction the wind is blowing. Oh and for some reason we get the strongest NE seabreeze on the east coast. Not sure why but if the it's forecast for yellow you will get 25knots, if it's in the green you will get 30+, it gets hectic!

I love taking people up there so if your ever in central qld, give me a bell

Wish I knew a bit of this a couple of months back. I was in Yeppoon for a weekend and had a decent session at the causeway. I had heard about the river mouth further north, sandy point is it? But, I had no 4wd and wasn't sure about best times etc. Google earth showed it to be a great looking spot.

Causeway is still a good spot tho.

Yeh sandy is epic but you get to get the tides right. And if you loose your board is gone forever!
