Hi All - got a trip to Coral bay,WA planned from Oct 1 to Oct 13 and wondering whether or not to bother taking kiting gear. Will a short board and 11m switchblade get the through there, or are the winds still too light/inconsistent ?
any advice greatly appreciated...
/m.
Mate, a little further north and you have Exmouth, kite expo is on from oct 4-11, check out the events guide.
Check out the graph for Gnaraloo (WA North West).
I'd def be taking my gear and a 9m kite - it should be blowin'.
Hi Beafort
I head up to coral Bay each Easter and always take the kite gear (blew its T**S off this year). Word of warning though you cannot kite in the main bay, you need to walk north around the edge of the bay to the next mini bay, the shark nursery. There is a small sign you can kite north of this. Really flat water, mini reef at low tide. Now as its a nursery don't know what the reef shark and pointers breeding season is but I know its clear at easter.
You are only 50 minute drive from exmouth, but you will have to drive up and over to get to the kite spots, so probably 90 minutes. Would reccommend you take a repair kit with you, as there is no place to get a repair done, not even a sailmakers (Kitefix do a good on for about $85 you can get from kitepower i think), and there is a lot of sharp kitehating coral up there. Oh and get some cheapy crocs from target or woolies.
Have fun!!
You were lucky to get wind over Easter toddws but your right about the exclusion zone. It is a real pity the one protected bay down there is now closed and the shark nursery is so small and quite a dangerous spot to kite with oyster rocks and direct onshore wind blowing into a massive sand dune right at the high tide mark. The closest safe spot is around point maud where its choppy water like Pinnaroo. You can head further north in a 4wd and find some protected sandy bays to kite but just remember you are responsible for you own safety and medical help is a long way away.
Or you could just head up to Exmouth where all but the snorkeling beaches are open to kiting and you can demo the 2010 gear at sandy bay.
Don't forget Theresa is doing her 100km SUP for the RFDS that time aswell. Its a cause which up here is the one thing which could save your life.
I would also bring a smaller kite as well.
