Hello, everyone!
I'm a female in my late 20's who has randomly found themselves stranded on the West Coast, and would love to at least try, and even better get a handle on, kite-surfing before I have to get back to the East Coast by the first week of July. Are there any locals (I'm near Bunbury, but really anywhere from Perth to Margaret River) who are happy to show me how?
My aim is to get a basic handle on kite-surfing in half a dozen sessions or so, and then hopefully get my own second-hand kit (in the odd chance that anyone is selling anything good for cheap, please also contact me!). I'm told I'm going to need these skills for an upcoming work experience adventure. I no longer have wheels, but am happy to pay petrol if someone can collect me from Glen Iris (next to Bunbury) on the way through, otherwise I'll have to try to work something out with public transport (which is looking tricky). I have my own wetsuit and I might even have booties and gloves in my snorkelling gear (if you also dive and are happy to take out a newbie with a PADI license, please also hit me up!).
At this stage I'm fairly readily available, unless I get temp work somewhere, which is looking unlikely in the current job market here. I'm not free this weekend 23-24 May, but otherwise I should be, weekday or weekend.
I hope someone is available and happy to get in touch with me soon! :-) Thanks in advance!
...... Bit of side boob in the avatar pic and you might have been a chance with some punter. Best of luck anyway....
Unfortunately it's not the best time of year to be learning to kite. Suggest you wait until September when the sea breeze returns.
good luck!
^^^ As above, unfortunately you'd be lucky to get 2 good days of wind between now and July.
I was the only person out at Pinnaroo point on Saturday last week, nothing for about a month before that, and even though I brought the right kite for the conditions, I was struggling for enough consistency to avoid drifting downwind. Needless to say, the conditions were inappropriate for learning.
My own personal advice, would be to go to Bali (ripcurlschoolofsurf.com/courses-reservation/kite-surfing/). I learned there, they have a boat to drag you up wind which is amazing when you're learning, and after attending schooling in Tarifa and England, I would have to rate my experience in Bali the best.
I was actually standing up on my third lesson (the first one where they let me use a kite in the water), but that is by no means a guarantee. And indeed, I benefited immensely in Tarifa from practicing water starts with just my feet dragging on sand. But the instruction was good, I just didn't get enough of it.
There was also no lesson if the conditions were unsuitable. Something that I have unfortunately not seen other schools doing.
The wet season is pretty much wound up right now, and although it doesn't look like they have particularly impressive winds at the moment, next Saturday and Sunday afternoon look like sweet predictions (www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=208480). That should give you enough time to buy tickets and book somewhere to live.
School holidays don't kick in 'til the end of June either, so accommodation should be cheap if you slip in asap. You will probably find that it doesn't cost all that much more than where you're currently renting as long as you don't stay in the tourist districts. Although it would be cheaper again if you could split the bill with a +1.
If you want to fit in 6 good days of kiting, I would be looking at maybe 3 weeks in Bali, just because winds are not consistent, and because when I was learning, 2 days of consecutive kiting was just murder.
Keep an eye on this Monday. Realistically, probably won't know until Sunday whether the wind is really coming or not, and won't know until Monday morning which beaches to hit up as northerlies are the most unreliable predictions we get. I'm basically expecting Tuesday's prediction to come forward to Monday and die down about 10 knots, myself.
Assuming you don't get any better offers and the wind does actually get here, I'm willing to pick you up from any train station north of the cbd, with a view to driving to Alkimos for some breathing room. But given that Monday is a public holiday, I suspect public transport would be more horrific than usual.
I'd also be the creepy stranger in the white van though, so there is that.

you wont be kiting at any beach on a NE mate .
?
You mean, aside from pinnaroo, mullaloo, alkimos and safety bay?
It's not clear it's a northeasterly yet, and I have already kited a stormy one two weeks ago... wind is wind and I'll take what I can get.
But I take your point, I probably shouldn't be advertising sketchy weather to a learner.
Creepeeee ^^^^^^
Only problem is that the shaggin wagon attracts exclusively the *wrong* kind of virgin.

I can't imagine too many girls would be willing to get in to the back of a white van with starwars stickers and fake lawn
North easterlies @ Alkimos are dead offshore FWIW.
Seriously are you for real........ ? Please do the female species a favour and work on your IQ........ ... mmmm there is little wind this time of year.. better still you could rename yourself erm..... no that would be mean, but with such unintelligent posting... could I recommend a book " kitesurfing basics for beginners " its written in big font with lots of pictures so you should be able to master it ( the skills necessary for your job needs ) without even endangering anyone else's life and lovey adventure girly... anyone that offers to take you anywhere to learn to kite..... at the moment is seriously looking for something else and it has nothing to do with a kite..... like ....
?

you mean apart from the fact all of those beaches are offshore on a NE ?
Pinnaroo's north end is southwest sloping. Safety bay's north side also. (although stricken off the list due to sewage)
I've been out in cross off shore at Mullaloo also, although that was southeasterlies. Cross off shore that you can self rescue in has never scared me, I'm not sure why everyone else is so terrified?
I'll take the point about Alkimos, I haven't been there yet so I don't know. That's why I was going to check it out.
I've had my equipment since December. I assumed Adventure Girl was going to be spending Monday learning to fly a kite with myself acting as a supervision sandbag holding the back of the harness. Apparently I have attracted ire for making the offer.

... Think you'd find that most experienced kiters don't think it is a great idea for someone who has "had their gear since december" to be trying to teach anything at all. When I came to kiting 10 years ago I had been surfing for 20 years, had been in some heavy situations and had a healthy respect for the ocean and the consequences. It concerns me that some get into kiting, can learn to stand on the board pretty quick, but may not have any real clue about the ocean or wind, and then get the ambition mixed up with the capability. I think this is why there are so many stories of unsafe practices on our beaches, and why ultimately bans at certain beaches are inevitable. Just my 2 cents. Also, the OP hasn't been back on since her first post, I'm guessing she is not fair dinkum at all, and just another who has seen kites surfing and thought "that looks fun, I'll give it a try", then loses interest a day later.....

I presume you mean the coast is facing southwest.("sloping")
That been the case, south east will be cross wind.
This also means that north east is 90 degrees to that (straight or dead offshore).
Not the ideal wind for anyone - Let alone a newbie teaching a first timer.
See you in South America or Antarctica.
I'm so sorry guys, I thought no one had responded to my post, I was expecting email notifications!!
I am totally serious, and I'm here until the beginning of July.
Yes, it's a legit work experience thing... I'll be crewing a yacht (total n00b lol, some but minimal experience) with a bunch of kite surfing fanatics... If I can't get some lessons in I'll be totally left out because literally everyone else is going to be spending all their spare time doing just that. Plus I've admired the sport from afar for a while now and have been interested anyway, so this is just the push I needed to start! :-)
I'm genuinely serious about this, if anyone is interested in helping me out, please PM me :-) Side boob is only possible in person :-P Lol!!!
Best thing for you is to get a trainer kite with de power similar to a full size kite, and fly it on light wind days in parks, ovals, beaches, wherever you can everyday. Fly it til you can do it blind folded and learn to run along the ground with it, even ride a skatey later if you have a place to try.
then when you get out on your yacht somewhere with steady wind, I'm sure the crew will teach you the ol water start on their rest breaks. Side boob should close the deal too.
Good luck, living the dream!
ps. Quality call by hybrid haha
Hi, all!
I had a great afternoon on Monday practicing on a beach with a trainer kite with a new friend (who hasn't participated on this thread). I'd like a few more sessions like that before hitting the water, can anybody help me out? I'm keen to master this as quickly as possible and don't want to wear any one person out (except myself lol)! ;-) Then I want to hit the water. As often as possible, as soon as I'm competent.
BTW I have wheels now, so am happy to go anywhere when possible. (& BTW the shaggin' wagon didn't scare me, the trick is to not get into the back lol! If it had 70's carpet and a skeazy old foam mattress with leopard print bed linen on it, on the other hand... *shudder* - the bad taste lol!!!)
Oh and I was told I have to master this before I join the crew because the first place their team is going is teeming with tiger sharks and the second I could easily get blown off an atol and get lost at sea!! As good as my guardian angels have been so far (being a motorcyclist) I don't want to push my luck lol!
And, by popular request, here is some side boob to get you started. ;-P

Found a good spot in Mandurah, ended up being perfect for the trainer, good control followed up by a few more hours on the trainer then master freezing cold body dragging of the joys of learning in winter

Uhm no offence to anybody, but Se at mullas is side side off shore other words it's almost totally off shore and if anybody has kited there man kiting close to the shore line wil be hard as there is hardly no wind and also ur kite will not fly properly, as I tried to fly a trainer kite on a Se and did not work so great. And I have only been kiting for 2 weeks
