Watch the promo video, there are some guys getting serious air over land, one gust a broken line, any mistake is going to end in serious consequences is it worth it?

Should there be some sort of disclaimer on sites like this?

Am I too old?

No worries, for 15 seconds of glory, the price might be death or an injury like a broken spine and varying degrees of paralysis, with some assorted small change like ripped and torn ligaments + shattered bones and later osteoarthritis, that will prevent normal walking and everyday movement and even the ability to ever kite again??
Enjoying the simple things in life will be over, all for a few seconds of.................

Not worth it in my opinion Luke, want to go big, go as hard as you like over water.
Get it on video and there is still a glory chest to claim with the added bonus you will likely live to kite again another day!

Only some of the huge jumps are mad. Land freestlye is ok but going HUGE certainly has risk involved. Sure you can go 10m high on water but a 10m jump on land feels much much better. You know you can't **** it up. You know you have to get it right because if you don't you are DONE!

Unfortunately it is worth it. The adrenaline rush you get from going big on land intense. To equal this rush on water is very hard. It involves going as fast as you can, edging as hard as you can and 'sending it'.... i have done it in 3feet of smooth water for 'sh1ts and giggles', after all i am over water, and i can tell you when i was up there it was all sh1ts and no giggles. Awsome rush!

I wish it wasn't worth it but it is.... and it's blood addictive. You just have to take it a bit more seriously than the water stuff.

Damn, I can't believe some of those guys are looping their kites in the air. Super big air is nuts, but looks sick!

This could be bad. I love going big and am already jumping on bitumen, not big, but schmick is right, the rush is intense even little jumps get you hootin' as the pain of a wrong landing is very real and always so close at hand.

Even speed scares the hell outa me. I currently ride barefoot in the bindings with no padding or helmet..... thinking about padding up to start jumping bigger. I'd like to wear shoes but coming from a kiteboard, I need that direct feel together with the board so I know what is going on and can get out of the bindings fast if need be.

Thanks for the vid Steve, inspiring stuff!

Hmmmm!

Last time I had buggy on bitumen I had to much grip and almost crashed because of it (path in a park)

I agree with Mike, the rush is intense no room for error, when you get that ultimate float there is nothing else like it. The only reason I build up speed is to jump thats why I buggy.

We are looking at this the wrong way though, is it dangerous to jump, quite possibly, but to counter and lessen the chances, use a really really big floaty kite

The more float, the less chance you have of landing hard.

Good winds,

Have you tried WITH shoes?? I've just bought myself a landboard and was trying to decide how to go with this. I can kite at an intermediate level (Have been kiting for 3 years now) what are the differences to riding on the water?? anything I should know??

Just use sport shoes something that is comfy with good flex and that you are not in love with because they will get trashed.
Point the board downwind on takeoff just like on water, then bear away after you have some land speed.
Use big open spaces, have a quick release/kite depowering leash set up and know really, really well how and when to use it.
Don't ride overpowered at first, try small jumps at first and land with the board pointing downwind, same as the water, then quickly bear away.
Depower kites are the way to go.
What board did you get?

Hi D,

Reason I don't like shoes on bitumen, is it is much easier to get out of the bindings when barefoot. On grass I like shoes because on grass I can powerslide the board and ride faster. If I get hauled over the handlebars, it's ok 'cause you slide on grass and it is a bit softer and less abrasive than bitumen.

Steve pretty much nailed it. Main difference between water and land is on land everthing has to be precise. Precise timing, precise kite handling, precise direction etc etc. On water you can slide the board to accomodate for a slightly wrong landing and if you fall in there is no stress. On land, if you make a mistake, even little ones, the fall is hard and you will break stuff.

I reckon landboarding will tidy up your kiteboarding and give you some perspective about kiteboarding that is likely to make you ride harder.

Only other thing you need to know is use much smaller kites as rolling friction is waaaay less than water friction.

Have fun,
