Hey has anyone considered using a kayak or half of one as a seat or body? Would seem you can pick up old fibreglass ones pretty cheap (under $100) or would they be too heavy?

I thought of doing this myself but ultimately went for plywood and glass (stitch n glue) seats. You would likely have to reinforce a kayak hull for use as they are designed to sit in/on water. Not resist loads at specific points (ie: bolted to frames). A kayak would also need significant modification for use, remember you need space for elbows and feet to be comfortable. Done well I think a kayak would make a nice promo 5 style seat...

Yeah, all good points Lachlan.

Perhaps a canoe might be an easier shape to work with as they tend to be a bit wider. As you say, Kayaks are designed to sit in, not lay down in and our shoulders tend to be wider than our waists.

I didn't think of the foot room, would be a big issue given how narrow they seem to be down that end.

I would definitely keep my eyes out for tandem kayaks...I know I do.

Dont count out plywood and fibreglass. Probably the easiest option for a seat and you can make it to suit the frame.
