I want to replace my anchor chain.
What are the recommendations for my Mottle.
Also where is the best place to buy in Sydney?
I got mine from Muir in Campbell Pde, Manly Vale. Very helpful and a good price.
The first lot was 12 years ago and I had to remove a couple of metres last year due to unsatisfactory corrosion but still have 20 metres on the S&S.
I bought another 15 metres a few years ago for my back up anchor. They only charged me for 10 metres, the length I was after, as it was an end piece.
Mine is, from memory 8mm short link for the Muir 500 manual winch. Similar for the Mottle I expect.
I nearly bought a Mottle 33 high side, lovely yacht but the one in question wasn't in good enough condition for the price. I still like them, one of the best in the size range.

Not sure there is a specific recommendation for any vessel. It depends on a whole range of factors, including whether you want to sleep with an anchor down or not. Also depends on your available chain/warp stowage area, and the weight carrying ability (150kg of chain right up in the bow may markedly alter the trim).

I'm a big fan of all chain, of a decent diameter, instead of a chain/warp mix, because I like to sleep at anchor rather than worrying.

I presently have 12 m of 8mm so was thinking about using the same. What I wasn't sure about is how to tell the Chinese crap apart from good stuff also if there is a specific rating I should get.

Grade L chain is most commonly used for marine applications. Grade P has about twice the working load but is correspondingly more expensive. AS1418.1 and AS2321 are the relevant standards; anything made to meet or exceed this will give you more peace of mind.

Yeah stay away from Bunnings or BCF supplied chains in this case.
Also be aware that 8mm aint always 8mm. A European gypsy is measured differently to brands of different origins. A link may fit nicely when tested, but three links on and it may be as much as a mill out, and don't ask me which terrifying moment I had the realisation that a millimetre difference is too much......
