Now I've painted my boat it's made the winches look terrible, so I want to
re-chrome them. How do I get the drums off ??.

While you have the winches apart it may also be a good idea to give them a good inspection for other things that might be needed, Hutton keep a supply of Barlow parts.

For your yacht Sam a pair of Anderson ST 28 winches should be ideal. For my money the best you can buy. Full retail around $1,100 each but shop around ebay, Gumtree etc you should be able to do much better.
Even second hand Andersons will be better than most other brands and converting old Barlow/Barients to self tailing will most likely cost more than they are worth.

Good work HG and Cisco. Missus and I always sail together but even so we find our 150% headsail
a bit of a handful when tacking. So we've taken to reefing the headsail to 100% most days and that has
proved to be so much easier and I don't see the need for self tailers.
The winches I want rechromed are ones I don't use (spinnaker etc). I just want to finish the boat off
nicely and so.......well....you know.

I have Barlow self trailers on the halyards and heady sheets. A pair of Barlow non self trailers for the secondary sheets winches.
Hardy, rarely get serviced, never been a problem.
I bought the secondary sheet winches from Hutton, he gave me good advice and a fair deal. However, a mate took their advice and bought smaller sheet winches for his S&S34 and is very disappointed.
I think it pays to know what you want/need to take the right advice.
I have Barlow 25st as main winches at over 30 years old they are still going great. What's wrong with Barlow winches?
There's nothing wrong with Barlow's. I just want to get mine re chromed. The headsail
winches are 24's.
It appears that there are not as many chrome plating works as I thought there might
be. A couple of calls have told me it can be quite an expensive excercise.
The original question was 'how do I take the drums off' seems that you would know

Thanks Fishy. Allen keys I've got by the dozen. I guess I can stop the winch from turning
with one of those filter remover things. I'll give it a go.
Sam, getting anything chrome plated these days is very difficult. Not many places left that can do it and even fewer around that will do a good job, all to with the EPA and toxic chemicals involved.
Most of the rubbish that you see these days is duplex chroming where they don't nickel plate before chrome plating the article. They will tell you it's a better system, the reality is it's a cheaper system and more margin for them.
Pine River Electroplaters in Qld. used to be tops, but the business is now in the hands of someone else, they take your parts and then you have to fight to get them back.
Maybe get on to some of the Street Machine forums to find who is doing good work these days at a price that won't make your eyes water.

There are some powder coatings that are hard wearing.....and metal powder applications that are extremely hard wearing - cost???
Doing a bit more research has revealed that there are 'agents' that you drop off the part to and
they send it off to whoever.
There's a local one at the commercial complex on the corner of Forest Way and Mona Vale Rd.
They give a price per size and my winches fall into the $30 or $50 per item bracket, which seems
doable price wise. I've got five winches of various sizes, the biggest ones are 24s. But as LC has
said, it may not be a good job.

Hydraulic rams are hard chrome plated and have nothing in common with decorative chrome plating like what Sam wants.
I still tend to lean towards the Street machine boys or the Hot Rodders, they only want the best for their toys. They would know who offers quality at a price.
