hi all,
A few people have expressed an interest in Butyl Tape. Here's what I found in Australia. I'm using it extensively (instead of Sikaflex) for bedding with excellent results. About $20 per roll.
Here's a link buildingproductsonline.com.au/butyl-tape.html

Are there any sharp edges on the packaging I need to be concerned about?

No sharp edges, but you have to be veevery careful when you touch it because it's veeerrrry sticky.
You could end up with it locking your hands together and falling overboard, unable to swim and drown - or worse...

On a serious note, is it suitable for say sealing things like staunchen bases where a lot of compression is required? Does it of squeeze out the side of the fitting when the bolts are tightened?

Hi Ashley,

is it suitable for say sealing things like staunchen bases where a lot of compression is required? Does it of squeeze out the side of the fitting when the bolts are tightened? - yes, it does squeeze out the sides, so when finished you probably want to trim this excess for a neat appearance.

One consideration though, where possible, its best to not rotate the fixing screw which tends to break the seal of the bedding compound to the screw shank. Preferably, if you have a screw/bolt with a nut, tighten the nut down rather than rotating the screw. Also, it's worthwhile to countersink the screws before applying the tape.
Here's a link to an excellent tutorial on bedding fittings (and lots of other good stuff) - very well worth reading...

Thanks! That's a good price and the grey is a good colour. I have the black and it can stain the deck.

All good advice, and here's one more pointer.

I started out applying butyl like a gasket, covering the entire area of the fitting. One problem was that with so much butyl to compress, it was quite hard to properly tighten the bolts without having to do it repeatedly. Another problem was heaps of butyl oozing out the side. Yet another was that it invariably oozed into the screw thread.

These days I just make a ring of butyl to surround each screw or bolt, with enough diameter so that when compressed it won't squeeze into the thread and get pulled around. I also put a little collar under the head of the fastener. This method only uses a fraction of the amount of butyl, with less ooze to clean up, is far quicker, and has sealed just as reliably over several years.

Butyl is fantastic, not least because it doesn't go off. So forget about the cost - just think of all those 3/4 full gone-off Sikaflex tubes you've had to chuck out over the years!

Cheers, Graeme

Hi Cav,
This link should take you to the correct web page.

buildingproductsonline.com.au/butyl-tape.html

Note its described black on the website, but I have only ever received grey.
Maybe you should call them to clarify colour and availability.

I really like using butyl. Nice thing about it the stuff that oozes out the sides after you tighten the bolts dead easy to get rid of. Just cut around the base will a knife and peal it away. You can roll it up into a ball and re-use it if you want to. And it doesn't stick to everything in site like sikaflex etc. It's cheap and the unused portion doesn't go off like most other stuff.

Hi Andrew, I ordered and received the white tape from tapesonline too and yes it has a fine reinforcing nylon mesh in it. It seems to form and squeeze out ok when I do mock tests. Did you use this on anything? What do you think, is it ok for boat use?

I used it on a few fittings before I got the nice grey stuff from building productsonline. It has worked, but is no where as good. It's harder to apply because it can't be rolled up in a sausage around a bolt.

Have been using product above for most fitting and for places where I need something more fluid I use

www.caravansplus.com.au/cartridge-z-bond-ezy-caulk-white-500g-paintable-removable-p-204.html

It does eventually thickens up to similar consistency to the tape.

Yes it appears black does mean gray, they were quite responsive. You could check directly with their sales team before ordering.

It says Butyl Rubber Sealant on tube and is white, at least for a while. I also used it on caravan about 6-7 years ago and the skin is now more of a light grey then white.

Thanks Harb, I think this is a far softer version of the butyl tape, and is termed butyl mastic. People tend to warn off using this on boats as it's increadibly messy and not as good as the tape for marine use.

I have bought in some rolls of Bed-it tape from Compass Marine in the US. It cost me $200 for 4 rolls. I can let 3 rolls go at cost for $50 a roll if anyone is interested. Could even sell it by the meter as you generally don't use a lot of it. I am at Manly in Brisbane. Check the website. www.pbase.com:443/mainecruising/butyl_tape
This has been specifically developed for marine applications

In Adelaide, I get white butyl tape from my local caravan service centre (Australian Caravan Company on Daws Road.)

It's the right consistency for bedding marine fittings and a good price. I think it was about $2/metre for 50mm wide tape.

I had some sealing jobs to do and found this at the local Green Shed (Bunnings)

Black only from what I could see, but if you need it NOW then beggars can't be choosers, I went with the one-on-one product
