I troll a line when cruising but thats about the limit of my fishing.
My wife keeps telling me I should fish more. I have three or four rods and some handlines aboard as well as all sorts of lures, hooks and other stuff.
My problem is that I'm simply not a good fisherman and therefore would rather do something else.
I like to eat fish, no doubt about that, just can't get myself switched on to the catching side of it.
Many years ago I used to trade home brew with trawler crew in return for fish and prawns. Now THATS a good way to get fish.

They would be much nicer if they were dropped into an ice slurry!
The only Barra I ever got was with a 12 gauge up in the Territory about forty years ago.
It was in fresh water, just sunning itself in the shallows and all I had at hand was a .222/12 gauge over and under and was hoping to get a duck.
Shot at the water and stunned it, pilled it out and cooked it in the coals the way the locals did.
We could shoot crocs back then too.
I usually tow a lure when out. At this time of year i get a few couta each trip. Drifting near the moorings I get a few calamari, and out near Mud Island a few medium size flathead. I have a supply of Me Goreng noodles aboard and usually cook them up with the diced fish thrown in with a few green vegies. Quick and easy meal while bobbing about the bay.
Salt n pepper Calmari from Forsters Inlet North East tip of Tassie ! Caught 2 of the biggest squid in my life! Nearly took my handlines ! But tasted so good
Southace,
Theres seven Barra in that boat,
Thats six more than I have caught in my life,
No one likes a smart ass ya know.
I decided last year that I should learn to fish so I could catch and eat when sailing. You know, like a real sailor. So I watched a bunch of episodes of iFish and the others on the tele, a few YouTube videos for different species, bought a few rods (KMart and Aldi) and started having a go.
I surprised myself by catching lots of different species from the boat: flathead, bream, snapper, leather jacket, silver trevally, tailor, whiting, aust salmon, kingfish, mahi mahi (trolling out of the Heads), estuary catfish, squid, octopus and blue swimmer crabs.
I found that I became quite addicted to it this last summer, probably because Sydney Harbour was boiling with fish. I went beyond catching to eat and started to become a bit of a catch and release angler, partly due to the recommendations on limiting fish ingestion in the Harbour due to dioxin levels. Came to love the feel of a good fight but wasn't always in the mood for all the mess of gutting and filleting. Sometimes I'd fish rather than go for a sail - I began to worry. I have had best results with vibe lures and freshly caught bait.
Anyway, I've calmed down now; the warm water has gone and the winter boat jobs are lined up. Glad I've learned a bit about fishing and know I'm in with a chance if I pull the rod out at the right time.

This flathead committed suicide while we were swinging on our mooring in Careel Bay. I often trail a line while sailing but have had my line cut of three times by other boats. I'm probably in the same category as Franrick.

Interesting. Never heard of them. I'm using vibes similar to this with two triples on them - would you really add a stinger assist to that, NSW?

Here's some snapper I caught in Moreton Bay (Peel is) last Saturday morning, albeit from the tender
Back on board having coffee by 7.30am
DrRog,
You will find that with stingers they are just caught on the lip, seems they test the lure a lot of the time and with these the hook up is increased.

Yes. The ones i use come with rings through one of the holes.
Don't let this happen to you.
Used to pole dolphin fish. Drift near trap floats and get them up, pole them flat out for a few minutes. Small ones would slip through scuppers and I reckon many got poled a second time!
