Hi everyone
I'm searching for a mooring in the Geographe Bay area that I can rent on occasions or buy outright. I just want to get out of the marina and stay overnight or a few days. My yacht is 12m Beneteau with 1.8m draft.

Regards
Rob Harrison

Give Parks and Wildlife a call, they administer that area. Maybe also try Geographe Bay Yacht Club for info.

if moorings are available, it is much better on the sea floor environment than anchoring anywhere and everywhere.

I agree with rumblefish, why waste any money if it's just a couple of days drop the anchor and save some dough.

This is Thomson Bay on Rottnest Is. There is probably over 150 moorings In this popular bay alone. Imagine what it would look like if everyone over the past decades dropped anchors anywhere and everywhere. I strongly believe if moorings are available, they should be used to protect the environment as much as possible. It is not a waste of money!

www.google.com.au/maps/place/Geographe+Bay/@-33.625,115.3175335,10188m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x2a2e6ab83f561805:0x25cbbb663c6086a7!8m2!3d-33.625!4d115.3197222 . Geographie Bay is hardly the same situation as Rottnest Island, I would never suggest anchoring except as a last choice at Rottnest island, however there is plenty of room to do so at Geographie Bay so why not save some money.

Must of been a quiet day at Rotto that day FreeRadical.
At times all those moorings are i n use and you can hardly make your way through. Sometimes (about this time of year) you could be only one of three or four boats in Thompsans. That is when ts at its best. But mooring hire is damn expensive all year round there and I don't think you could ever anchor and not get fouled up.

FlyingTyke, as far as I am aware and unless it has changed in the last 18 months, the mooring area at Quindalup is not regulated (yet). Find out from DoT what it would take to lay a mooring. I would much prefer to moor over anchor. Environmental factors aside, I am much more relaxed on a mooring as oppose to a (possible) dragging anchor.

Rental moorings at Rottnest aren't cheap, but it does cover park entry fees and secure moorings. We pay $900 per year for a shared mooring (SMS). Our shared mooring isn't in Thomson Bay, but we can use any mooring at Rottnest as long as we move on if the owner or their designated SMS users come by. It's not a bad system that gives access to as many as possible. There is a designated anchoring area to the East of the Army Jetty.

Im not a lock up the forests greenie, but do think we should take steps to minimise our impact on the environment whilst still enjoying it as much as possible. If there are public or hire moorings available, they should be used. It doesn't matter where and skimping to save a few bucks is really quite selfish. Greographe is not Rottnest, but one day it might be just as crowded, best we take care of all marine environments before they get trashed.

it would be nice if all our marine dollars in Rego and fees went directly back into facilities for us to enjoy and protect the environment, but that's never going to happen.

There are some nice big sand patches near the army jetty. You can look and see if your anchor is set

And when the day comes that Geographe Bay is as crowded as rottness Island a) I will not suggest anchoring AND b) sailing will not be done anymore because there will be no room to move your boat along the coast, seriously have you taken a look at the size of Geographe Bay, certainly there will be areas of crowding at some of the more populated coastal townships, but to crowd the entire Bay would take a damned lot of boats, and yes if the money for Rego and mooring fees went back into facilities for boaties then I would not mind paying for moorings, but as you say it's not going to happen.
