Hi SB's,
does anyone know of a any H28 owners or experts that might be on here??
Ok, funny jokes aside, I have a relative that's been looking for some time for a 30'ish boat.
There's a local H28 (Walker) that's been on the market for a while, but like the one we used to own, it has front area as dunny and shower.
So my question to the brainstrust, do you know of any that have had a V birth converted or fitted?
If it possible easily, or would it end up too high?
In this case, I think the rest would be ok, but no front berth may be a deal breaker in this case.
Like any boat, its always a compromise.
thanks for your thought.
Oh, g'day HG, your on the home stretch!
Hi I have a Compass H28 with a v berth I'm about 6'2 tall and sleep comfortably up there. there is plenty of head room on mine , so no banging your head in the night
here's a few photo's of my v berth, I have 2 mattresses for extra comfort
Mines no way near finished but some one gave me some foam so I cut it to suit the V birth last year. When I motored around to Western port I slept on the boat at Blairgowrrie
Im 6 ft tall and could stretch out OK sleep stretched out I think if there were two in the V birth it would be feet forward heads astern .
I followed the existing fiber glass head insert and ran Ply out from that to the
I feel the best forward cabin on a H28 would be on Crested Turn .
When he built it he reset the side lining so the hull ribs showed and lined it with ply

Ill dig up a photo of mine I moved my head to the stern bunk area and removed the port side bunk . There were a few reasons for doing it
I am not a contortionist and I wanted to enjoy working on my motor not hate it so the bunk went .I have an old cockpit cushion I can put in there and sit or lay down at the side of the motor gear box and work comfortably for hours.
I'm still not sure what head to use yet Ive a TMC macerator ready to go but May fit a sea cock to use it but buy a Thetford or some thing similar .
The laws are changing.
Been looking at the sani loo set up but think there a little on the expensive side for me
table and food draw there rough photos taken last year Ill be back in there this winter still doing a few things on deck
If you want a forward cabin, why not just buy a Compass 28/29. There are plenty about, and these days they are selling at lower prices. Old Herreshof said that if you mess with his h28 you will spoil it.
I disagree about H28 Crested Tern. Yes, it had a nice fore- cabin, but access was terrible. Also you lost the saloon berths. The H28 was designed to sail offshore, and when you are sleeping at sea, the saloon berth is the one that works best- least movement.
A Compass would certainly be an option Yara.
Both boats have different advantages.
The option of the H28 came about as a more practical alternative to a another boat that was spotted which was a smaller gaff rigged timber boat that had traditional appeal.
As a keelboat for first time owner, we were looking for something around 26-32ft, f/g, diesel, headroom and suitable for a couple or shorthanded.
NSW and Qld have more to choose from.
Apart from the H28's good looks (to me anyway), it was local, although at $33k listing it was slightly higher than budget.

The best place to sleep off shore on a walker H28 is the floor between the settee births. The only advantage crested turn has its the mast support post with its side entrance . Some one gave me the mattress foam so Ive cut it to suit The only time Id use the front V birth would be at anchor.
I'm very happy with what Ive done and have absolutely no regrets.
Ive good engine excess I have the head next to the cockpit entrance for storing wet weather gear
Id say the forward cabin will be mainly used for storage E#G. solar panel when anchored and I have a very large food storage draw which when filled would last me a very long time .Plus Ive now reduced my sea cock's by 2 less I may add one more still thinking on that one depending what head i end up with which is not really being fitted for me any way Id be happy with a Herreshoff bucket
The added bonus for me is not hitting my head If I was using the original head in the forward cabin
I lost one stern bunk and added if needed a V birth and a very enjoyable place to work on my Bukh D.V 24 even in a sea state
Which Id need a kick up the back side if that happens.
That old cockpit cushion is around 5 foot 8 inches long. I personally would not like to share the V birth for more than a few nights
But a very comfortable nights sleep on your own at anchor
I just have to image it on a walker Sands Id make it front opening screen plus the ventilation from the port lights at anchor.
But I'm "not" doing it this year ,its focusing on raising some sails .
But I might make a mock up just to see if it looked OK.
If it did Id love to fix the main sheet track to its roof at the end of the boom
I know I'm crazy Ha Ha
Over the anzac weekend my path crossed these two Walker H28's Off Portarlington on PPB
Firstly they passed on their passage to Queenscliff , both hard on the wind and powering along , really postcard images and i thought HG will never forgive me not getting a picture
A few days later i kept an eye out for them returning to geelong , camera in hand they appeared from the east and i sailed along with them from Grassy point to the mussel farm off Bellarine
With the wind from behind the images were not as good as our previous encounter but worthy of a post nonetheless
It appears they have hard dodgers also so perhaps some ideas there
They sail out of Western Beach in Geelong
