Hi all
Spent the last 3 days working on Aqua-Fae
Originally i thought i had a easy 3 days to service the engine and do a bit of maintenance out on the mooring but the slipway became free (was booked to go up next Friday) so it was a rush to ger her back together and running...
Slipped her yesterday after lunch and finally she has a clean bum and is ready to go back in the water It hade been around 16 months since she was last out and i am looking forward to seeing the difference it makes
The speed log was reading about half normal speed the last few months before i slipped her but i think a lot of this was due to the fouling on the log propeller
I think in future i might slip her every 6 months and give her a blast off instead of leaving it for so long
Regards Don
You have a sweet little yacht there Don.
I always feel the Tassy climate does help to
she is a great boat
Thanks Cisco and HG
She is back in the water now and I have a rdo next Friday so weather permitting i will take her for a sail and see how she goes
Regards Don
Took her out for a sail yesterday and in 10 to 15 knots of breeze with the main and number 2 she was doing 6 knots down hill and 6 knots up hill (occasionally touching 7 knots) and seemed to be moving much more freely through the water so the scrub and paint was worth while
Had a mate with me who has a Elliott 7.8 who is speed obsessed and we were pushing her pretty hard but she behaved herself
Regards Don
Just completed 3 days on the hard at Horizon Shores on the Goldcoast.
My Seaka was faster today as well, mind you I was motoring as there was no wind.
Now to keep her like she is now I will have to dive and give her bum a wipe down every 10 weeks.
I'm at Russell Island and Seaka moves quicker and more freely, now if I can just stop the bl...y ferries and their huge wake, things would be good!!
I recently put my doat on amorring in the river and had it hauled out and thr groth was more than I expected. I had here out adout 6 months for antifoul and in the ocian it was looking good but after 2 months it seem to build up very quickly. Is this normal ?
In my working life I was the skipper of a paddle wheeler on the Murray River.
Over a period of three or four years we'd get a bit of slime build up, but nothing
remotely like you have. Are you moored next to some toxic waste factory.??.

I own a power boat and it is a pen on the river in Perth. I was unable to get it out and about for about 8 months last year and the result was a heavy build up of growth, including mussels and the stuff you have shown. The Swan river has a lot more phosphates in it compared to the ocean based moorings from over east... just consider the algal blooms we get in spring and autumn.. so yep it happens, although I wouldn't use the word normal. The only way to prevent it is to regularly using your boat, get the sea water passing over the hull, and doing a dive and use a soft bush to keep it clean. My cruising speed is usually 18 knots, and the drag on her caused by the growth dropped cruising to 10 knots! also mine was anti fouled properly about 2 months before the extended period of non use, I am currently using it every week end and occasionally mid week and there is nothing on it after 4 months of regular use. Moral of the story is get out there.
Thanks for the feed back. The paint is Hempel Olympic and it is a slow anti foul as my crucing speed is aroud 5knots. I have only just morred in the rive just by the old swan brewry. I think the paint is doning it job as the growth came off quit easly. i do take here out quite regularly but i will be getting it painted in the next 2 months by the haul out guys and i will see if that helps a bit. After seeing the grouth on here bum i am a bit unsur weater to dive and scrub i dont like to dive in water i can not see more than 3 feet.
Mick
if that's 2 months of growth or even 6 months after an antifowl paint job .......... i would be looking for a new ablative type paint !!!
THATS OUT OF CONTROL !!!!!!
Just completed my antifouling job too. Managed to get 2.5 years out of it and it still wasn't too bad. That was on altex no 5. Tried jotun this time around. Polish and a few repairs and slipped back into the water with the wallet a little lighter...
I used a hard antifoul (international) 4 coats. Had good success with this. A lot cheaper than propspeed - 1 L will do 3-4 slips. Still get some barnies but only after 18mths. Don't have extreme fouling round here though!
Polished and painted for the new lady owner!
Hi Southace
She is a nice looking boat
Are there advantages/disadvantages of the light coloured anti-foul or do you just prefer the look
Regards Don
I have used Dover white for the past 10 years.....looks and a quality product. I have hempels blue on the the new boat and just 4 months it's growing weed!
Polished and painted for the new lady owner!
Knud Reimers or an old Halvo?
I did a lot of racing and a couple of syd-south ports on celeste, an knud Reimers that looked a lot like that!
Southpaw....
Happy to hear you sold "MAUD".
Hope the new lady owner looks after her as well as you and your dad did.
Well she seems to be paying the bills and buying me lunch! And is requesting me to teach her how to sail her! That works with me.....cheers
More before and after .
Just be careful remember "buy one get one free"
Interesting slipway. Four arms on our local and all four have to be in contact before the slip is raised. Does not matter how small the vessel is. Used to use just the front arms like in the above photos till a 45 foot steel yacht fell off! Mast went over the road and missed the parked cars.
We removed this old girl from the Swan a few years ago. I have no idea how long since it last had a bottom clean. I don't think it was all that long, the growth was probably more to do with it sitting idle. The rudder and prop had to be cleaned before we headed up to Freo to the slipway

On our Yacht Club slip the arms are fixed and boats are tied off in the centre on the cradle (the previous cradle had moveable arms)
On mine I tie the mast to the front arms and the sheet winches to the rear arms and normally ease the rears as the keel settles to the angle of the cradle as she comes out
The advantage of this is that you have easy access to all of the hull with nothing close to the hull sides when working on the boat
The slip can handle up to around 45 feet and 10 tons and when boats are slipped photo's are taken and notes made (how deep the cradle has to be immersed and if slings are required under the front or rear) for future slipping by the members who run the slip
If it is windy you normally tie the main halyard off to a nearby fence to steady it
Slip fees are pretty reasonable at $100 to slip it and $20 a day while you are up and $20 to use the very effective pressure cleaner
You have to be a club member to use the slip but a $45 a year club membership it is pretty painless
You can sleep on the boat at night if you like, there is a shipping container to lock your tools and stuff in if needed and the slip area has a hugh security fence around it
