Friend of mine up the coast is in a wheel chair and owned a 36' cat and had a crane setup on the end of his wharf for getting on and off the boat. Now has an Etchell that he races and still uses the crane for on and off.

Nice knot btw.

Going by the typos, I'd hazard a guess that there was still some boat ramp rage flowing through the veins when you wrote it.

My "tie without thinking" knots are :

Bowline
Sheet bend & double sheetbend
Figure of eight
Reef knot
Clove hitch
Round turn & 2 half hitches
Rolling hitch
Stopper knot
Truckers hitch

And, for some reason, a Sheepshank - although I have never used it for anything.

I can also do a good basic whipping.

A few other knots & whippings are handy but for them & splicing I relax with the instructions.

Oh, I can only remember the blood knot for fishing

Cheers

Ramp rage Indeed, Im not the person to heap **** on when it comes to the flamin wheel chair, been in it for 4 years I spend 10-16 hours a day in the chair, I should have been up walking 3 years ago, I have a prosthetic leg but keep getting infections in my stump which can take 6 months to heal, add in some other bull**** and Im well over my situation, so over it a few weeks ago I thought fark this **** Im done, so I took a hectic overdose of over 200 Dijoxin which is heart medicine, so to cut it short I nearly did the job My heart stopped, a week in ICU unconscious on a ventilator etc , So trying to pull the piss was like waving a red flag to a bull, way to early still,
You get a yacht and all of a sudden it's a new world of lingo, oh I need a Pelican hook, why would you wanna hook a pelican you galah?
yet the powerboat world is different, and knots, I suck at knots, I hate knots. Oh well

The secret to getting the bow line is that as you pass, with bitter end, the back of the small loop and then the standing part, your bitter end has to 'pinch' the standing part to the back of the small loop. It's not easiest to explain in words, if the back part of the small loop lies below the standing part then your bitter end has to pass through the small loop top to bottom so that when you then pass the bitter end over the top of the standing part you are pinching back of small loop and standing part together.

If you think about it this way then it's easy to follow it upside-down or back-to-front.. inside-out, 7 parts gone, half a pint away from a full keg etc..

I use sheep shanks all the time.. basically a truckers hitch is half a sheep shank (kind of),,, any how, I use it to pick up a loop and create a pull reduction tor binding down a load. Great knot,, dead easy to tie and falls apart with no load.

Bowline is irreplaceable and essential. I use a version of the method @ about 3 min in this vid (

) It does the hard parts in one step, I learned it while still in school, and is probably still one of the most useful things I ever learned.

It is hard to explain, best way is to put the rope around your torso and tie the knot in front of you, if the little Loop you create doesn't lock onto the bitter end you have passed through you will need redo the lube so it locks the bitter end then you can go round the tree and back down the hole.

There are a million (well maybe not that many) youtubes and apps.
If you have Android I would recommend Best Knots.
light and easy to follow with about 8 knots.

I'm left handed, so often people look askance and frown at my bowlines (and other knots) like there is something wrong, but a closer inspection confirms it is normal, just...backwards.

Like Shaggy I'm a leftie and my bowlines will be back to front too. When I was first shown how to tie one I was told a little verse.
'Make a hole ( loop ) the rabbit comes up through the hole around the tree and back down the hole". Sounds a bit childish but
it sort of tells you what to do.

Mate knots are essential. I try to practise knots as much as I can. You never know when you gonna need em.

Everyone seems to think that crew on a tug are the masters of knots. I'm going to straight up call bullsh!t on that. We only really use 5 knots. Bowline, sheepshank, 2 half-hitches, figure 8 (I always put 2 half hitches on the end of a figure 8 to many times iv seen them untie themeselves) And loop knot. These are very commonly used. I suggest if your bored, learn as many as you can.

You will be thankful you learnt it when you need it. Same goes with splicing.

Also, tying your boat up with a sh!tty knot that took you forever to do. Is a fantastic way of introducing your self to your anchorage/Marina as a wanka. Even more points if you're music is blasting and your crew are screaming at you just to get your attention.
Just my opinion
regards,
mick

I am right handed, but my bowlines are backwards, according to everyone I know. But they work, mostly.

I have a prosthetic but can't use until I get infection in stump under control, I have never let being in the chair stop me from doing what I want I can always find a way, I dragged my big chrysler 4 cyl outboard out of the trailer stood it on its skeg then bear hugged it and got to my boat lifted the bastard onto the transom and job done but in the trailer was also a Johnson 85 V4 I skull dragged out onto the ground and got on the ground and dragged it to it home, my OT cringes when she hears this from my wife, if I don't do it it won't do itself, my current infection I had a yammy25 I was moving it was lying across my lap My driveway is down hill so I've gone belting down the driveway into my shed and hit a ****ing screwdriver on the floor that spat out the chair and I ended up on the yammy slicing my stump open, it's taken 6 months to heal, it's almost healed so hopefully back on the leg soon, I still haven't worked out how to get onto yacht from the skiff, it's gonna be not graceful, I have to learn to do it without the leg coz I'll throw that onboard first, if I drop the leg in the drink I'm stuffed.

The rolling hitch is a handy knot to know,
If you get a winch override, you normally need to take off the tension. We carry a bright yellow emergency 6mm rope in the cockpit sheet bags. Throw a rolling hitch around the wrapped sheet/halyard, slide it as far forward as you can get it, throw your emergency sheet around another winch and take up the tension...voila you have a sheet/halyard without tension to clear the overwrap. Fast and easy.

You know you want to be very careful with your leg and not jeopardise it's healing by pushing the envelope especially after a couple .
My 25 yo grandson had his leg amputated above the ankle late last year , not heed warnings about infection ( she'll be right) and ended up having it recut above the knee in March.

I always feel for the people who have amputated body parts and their family's. Especially when they are young. It is good the advances in technology we have today for prosthetic legs, limb, etc. I personally couldn't imagine myself like that.
