"I did not know the difference between X and M"Wow! I didn't think I'd ever read this! What you guys really know about the boat would wipe off on a bit of dunny paper . "After reading posts on other forums about the 26M and island hopping in the Bahamas"

Keep moving the goal posts mate, that's what most trolls do . First the Mac can't be taken far from the boat ramp, then it's an unsafe boat, then it's not a sailboat nor a power boat. What else you got? Oh! then it's you can take it away from the coast and now it's only fit for island hopping in the Bahamas! LMFAO! Swear to god there are some truly ignorant armchair admirals on in this forum. You could cross the Atlantic in one of these IF you had 3 things, 1/ a plan 2/ some balls 3/ some luck. The right time of year and with the right conditions it would be possible, just not for me because I'd think you were a fool to try.

i bought the macgregor 26 about 2 yrs ago brand new for reasons some being trailerable ( ,no mooring cost ) , 22 knots cruizer with a suzuki 60 hp 4 stroke outboard . I know this boat is not a great sail boat but this is what i have at the moment and i believe the trip is possible just as a lot of others on this forum believe possible also cheers

Your joking right. Rough seas, 45 knots. Hardly a white cap in sight. No waves breaking over the boat, no white water in the air. Less than 1 metre seas, sea state maybe 3-4.

Maybe the 20 to 25(im being generous)kts feels like 45!!!

I'd like to see you do this Steve, I really enjoy reading and watching adventures in small yachts, in particular trailer yachts that can get right into the protected quiet protected anchorages and areas otherwise not seen from a large yacht.

I think you need some serious revision of your fuel figures though!!, I carry more than 60lts for a 8hp two stroke, coastal hopping port to port on the east coast.
I allow 2 litres per hour (to be on the safe side), actual consumption is a little under 2lph.

And a Merry Christmas to you. My island hopping was a tongue in cheek comment my friend .
After looking at your profile and posts I wonder if someone is playing good guy bad guy here?
Anyway have a merry and safe Christmas everybody - including you mate.

Calm the farm people.. The agro and name calling has no place here.
Bananabender is certainly no troll.. Hopefully Stevetheadventure doesn't go down with the ship, but this post certainly has.

I flew a helicopter over them many years ago (looking unsuccessfully for any sign of the Batavia wreck). I envy you your destination.

I think there are still remains of the wreck there. Also still discovering skeletal remains on the islands.

1400 shipwrecks on the WA coast. I reckon a few of them would still have remains and a few still remaining undiscovered. A few of them are in the Abrolhos area. Ild love to discover one.

The mutiny of the Batavia should really go down in Australian history. I believe even remains of a guillatine are still on one of the islands..

Remember though, that when you are loaded up with all your water, fuel and stores for the trip she wont be so lightweight any more. Plus if things get rough you will want to have your ballast tanks full for stability.

Good point Yara........WA is a coast full of nothing ( I mean that nicely ) Stores plus extra
will certainly weigh the boat down.

May I suggest that those who believe the stated wind speeds on videos like the ones above, google "Beaufort Wind and sea state scale".

You will find in the original scale, descriptions of the sea state to match the wind speed. Then have a look at the videos and match the sea state and you will realise that the wind speeds claimed are nothing like the actual values. Old fashioned technology that does not need a computer, but it works, and tells no lies!

If you haven't already done so, I recommend Peter Fitzsimons "Batavia" as a throughly engrossing read. I know some people think Fitzsimons is a dick, but this book is a really really good read.

You have only to see the effect of the wind on the blokes hair to see what the wind across the deck is!

+1, the Batavia book is a great read.

The guy planning Perth to Sydney and back in a Macgregor Should also read Fitzsimons "Mawson", the comparison between Amundson (the Norwegian) who was fist to the pole and got back alive and Scott, who died, is interesting.

Amundson ( apologies re the spelling) planned the trip to the nth degree. He used the best equipment and support animals available. They let the dogs do most of the work and when the food ran out ate the dogs. They put on weight during the trip.

Scot headed out on a "boys own adventure". He did not accept the available evidence that dogs gave the best chance of success. I think that Scott used donkeys. Scott was not interested in eating the animals. He and his team died.

The lesson is, use the best equipment available, and lots of detailed planning, to give the best chance of success!

At a guess the first vids about 15-20. Second vids about 20-25. No swell.
is that the standard mast? The one I saw in Syd harbour recently had a really thin mast. Thinner than my hobie 14.

but bro if you wanna do this trip you can. Like any adventure like this it'll be just an awesome Experience mixed with a few scary ones. Not a worry. Fun I reckon. Plan well. You'll be right. Like a hobie you can beach boat if need be. I say go for it but plan well. You'll need a lot of water and fuel. Geez man that part of the world is up there with the most isolated in the world- even on land So plan well.

to take care of the water problem I would install a solar reverse osmosis pump, get one that can be operated manualy, use sea water for showering you can get salt water soap. A solar oven could be a good buy as well, just in case you get out of meto raw fish is only good with sushi rice !
As I said I was not really impressed with the Mac performance (not my kind of boat) but I think you can do it, will take a lot of time so be prepared for that.
