Anyone know why Navionics charges 10x more for a chartplotter version of the same charts?
I can get the whole of SE Asia as an app for $35 and its $350 for the SD card with the same thing on it!!
I use an iPad and iPhone but more as back-ups. I quite like my chart plotter in the cockpit but those prices are just stupid. Funny thing in this day and age, if there was no app, I would just suck it up and buy the Sd card but knowing I'm being ripped off makes me sorta pissed.
Anyone got a card lying around thats not needed anymore?
I pay $75 now per year for navionics on iPad have 5 days to go before renewal. Seems all my marks get deleted and can't share the iPad version with the new iPhone. Like my invoice ASAP app it was free originally but once they get you hooked like nicotine they start charging. Pisses me of too so much for free!
Ive been holding off downloading the new version but as I have seven days left I took the plunge last week and have already noticed a diminishing of detail on the charts. Eg on a fishing mark of mine:
The old screen shot:
and the new screenshot of the same location
and more of a worrying safety issue, Chinaman's Hat, a large structure just north of the shipping channel out from Sorrento?Portsea only becomes visible on the chart when the map is expanded right out! It doesn't even appear on the chart when zoomed out! Now in my view this is bordering on criminal negligence. I notice that the on line web app maps still contain the finer detail as my old app did.
Has any one else noticed a dumbing down of details for their area with the new version?
There was a reseller on eBay . Sold me a card for $20. Can't find him anymore. Maybe in Alcatraz.
My navionics ran out ages ago. While sailing up n down the coast it would always glitch out as soon as I was about to cross a bar or go up a river. I had to have back ups everytime. A bit dangerous and it really appeared as if navionics did this on purpose to nudge me into buying again.
Free Market play 101 - launch product at attractive price (or even free), gain traction, wear out or buy out competitors by providing very good value, reach dominant market position then gradually jack up the price, knowing that 70-80% of customers tend to stay with the familiar and pay up. Shareholders like this.
Yeah it sucks. I ended up shelling out the cash. I don't use navionics that much even but it's nice to have on the display just for routing and distance. I use Ovitalmap to really pre plan my routes and for entering lagoons etc. here in raja ampat navionics is just not accurate enough. **** company that I will very happily not recommend to anyone. I emailed them about my concerns and their arrogant reply was that the card version has more options and is more expensive to produce.
I have updated Navionics on bot an iPhone app and on a late model chart plotter, but I find the $20 something app on the phone far easier to use, for route planing and auto routing. The chart plotter version at significantly more $ just does not seem to me be very user friendly?
On a side note, Moreton Bay is one of the toughest place I have found so far to navigate, so many shallow parts scattered all over it.
