currently on holidays in SA and spent the last two days in Goolwa on the lower section of the Murray.

On Friday afternoon the Goolwa yacht club have twilight racing, mostly RL 28/24's, Farr 750', Sonta 8 with swing keels. It was great to see these boats on the water in close combat. I was amazed how they were tacking in between the pylons of the Hindmarsh Island bridge closed hauled in a strong breeze.
Braver men than me.

No tide as the water level in the river is controlled by 5 barrages near the mouth of the Murray that separate the fresh / salt water. About 750mm height difference between water levels.

Don't know about "gutsy" ... all depends where you grow up and where you learn to sail.

Kind of what I was thinking too.. If you know the height of your mast, the height of the bridge and the H.A.T (apparently not an issue in this case) you shouldn't have a problem. Although being a river, flooding up stream might catch you out..
