Hi all
I have a tern and people often tell me they are a really good tender (not sure why)
I noticed there is one on gumtree in Sydney at the moment if anyone is interested http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/blakehurst/boat-accessories-parts/car-topper-8-foot-aluminium-tinny-lite-weigh-savage-tern/1066177054
I paid $500 for mine with wheels and a padded collar around it so this one seems a bit dear to me but who knows what they might take (this is mine in the picture)
Regards Don
One savage tern deserves another?
I have had my Tern and it is someone else's Tern
Regards Don
The Savage Tern is the only aluminium yacht tender ever made as far as I know.
Savage should have another Tern at making them. I am sure they would sell a shipload of them.

Hi Cisco
What makes the Tern any better as a yacht tender than any other similar size tinny available either in the past or now
You are the second person who has told me they are a good thing but I am not sure why this is the case

Hi Hg
Be patient and wait for your Tern
Regards Don
Sorry thought it must have been my Tern .
But then again if I caught a plane and drop into to where your Tern is and row her back here it would be my Tern Donk

Hi hg
My wife would like that as it leaks through the rivets in the hull and she does not like getting her feet wet
I must do something about fixing it one day

You don't fix because it pxss her off you bad man
It takes a bit less than that to pxss her off
Sometimes she says the sound of my breathing annoys her

It is their shape. Most tinnies have either a sharp bow or a blunt bow as in a pram dinghy.
The sharp bow has little buoyancy in the bow and will usually have a V bottom which has little stability unless planing. It also has to be longer to have the same buoyancy as the Tern. About the shortest tinnie you can buy today will be nine and a half feet and hardly any of them can be rowed efficiently.
The blunt bowed tinnies usually have very low freeboard and are usually intended for crabbing in rivers etc. They obviously do not cut the water well, slapping and pounding in a chop and in a swell will scoop the wave into the boat.
Your Tern is only 8 foot long isn't it?? It has a rounded bow which will cut the water well at slow speed ie when rowing and yet have good buoyancy in the bow. I am sure it would be rated for 3 people and up to 8 hp and would row well. It has a more rounded bottom rather than flat or V.
Yours with the added on float pads on the sides is quite perfect. The yacht dinghy shape made in aluminium is a big draw card.
If you want to get rid of it for a couple of hundred bucks, I will take it off your hands.
Hi Cisco
Thank you for your thoughts on the Tern
I am 110kg and 6 foot tall and my wife is around 75kg so we normally only go 2 up unless the water is dead calm as adding a 3rd person reduces the freeboard a fair bit
I use my 3hp on the back and I kneel between the seats and sylvia sits on the front seat when we are motoring as the rear seat is to far back for me to sit and steer comfortably
It rows ok but the only thing I have to compare it to is my previous 11 foot achillies inflatable and to be honest I am not much of a rower and we have about a. 400 meter run from the dinghy shed to the mooring and if the wind picks up it can be a hard and slow row back so 99 percent of the time I will use the outboard
The Tern is nice and light but looks to be well made and seems to tow ok behind the sailboat so I am happy enough with it
I have had the 3hp on a larger and heavier tinny 1 up before and it went quicker than the Tern but perhaps the Tern hull shape is not ment for speed
Regards Don
If it works for you that is good but if you want the ultimate blue water sailors dinghy you should hunt around for an AVON Redcrest.
They are even rarer than a Savage Tern. I just happen to have one in good nick (1986 model) that I scored in Sydney when I was buying my Lotus 9.2 for $300 which included a Mercury 4 hp O/B. I have had to do a little work on both but neither has done a lot of work.
I will be posting a thread soon on the subject of dinghies. Stay tuned.
Hi Cisco
I had a 1982 Achilles 11 foot hypalon
inflatable with a 8hp Suzuki for about 20 years and it was a great boat and lots of fun and when when moved to port huon and bought the spacy I used it for a tender with the 3hp but it was to easy to cut on the oyster shells on the dinghy shed ramp and jetty so that is when I bought the Tern
I love inflatables but not in areas with lots of oysters as I got sick of chasing leaks due to cuts from the razor sharp shells
Regards Don
