Extract from SH 2017 .
"Finistere is competing in her third Rolex Sydney Hobart have race, having contested the 1994 50th race and having a second go in 2008. Owner, Robert Thomas, rebuilt her for the Around Australia Yacht Race and she is a comfortable cruiser racer that is at her best in medium to heavy conditions. The race itself is only part of the journey, as Rob and his crew are sailing Finistere from Fremantle to Sydney just to make the start line. They compete regularly in WA, including in such classics as Geographe Bay Race Week and the Geraldton Ocean Classic."

Two bodies recovered, very sad.
Sounds like a keel fall off type capsize. The report will be interesting although the yacht won't be recovered out there.

Oh dear. I crewed for Robert on Finistere during a previous Geraldton to Fremantle race. Great bloke and regular crew.

Will rock the WA offshore sailing community. Condolences for all over there.

Condolences to all that new these two well. They died doing what they loved is the only consolation I can offer to their family and friends.

A mate caught the recovered yacht in this picture while photographing his own. The keel is completely missing :(
