For sea water temperature monitoring one of these work fine.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Digital-Led-Display-Thermometer-Fridge-Temperature-Gauge-Meter-Monitor-WS-/262023930932?var=&hash=item3d01d7e434:m:mU6OrshMzPZtFhNMFgvIiyg

Tape the sensor to the rubber hose on an intake as low as possible. Wrap some insulation around the lot and tape well. Works perfectly on an engine intake with the engine running but will work OK with it off too just not so immediate a change in temperature.
You can compare with a thermometer in the water and there will be a variation of probably one degree, this does not matter as it's the change your looking for.

You are a master of Ebay Ramona. Gee you find some good stuff there.

Can you find me a light sensitive switch for use on my anchor light?? Jaycar has one but it is a bit bulky and costs about $25.

Hi Cisco
Velleman supply a kit for a light sensitive relay/switch ,about $20.00 .I have one it works really well and is easy to put together. Kit is number MK125

Cheers
Al

Thanks Al. I found these and I am going to buy 10 of them. Some as gifts for friends and the others as spares.

thanks to cisco's original post

i immediately ordered the gme radio , c.h.smith marine $85 no speakers
and cheap dipole antenna

arrived within 48 hrs and installed immediately
i already had bulkhead speakers in cockpit and cabin with a switch to select either of them
and a place to mount the radio
too easy

tested really well aux , am , fm , lw , sw and even vhf

yesterday used it on my sail down to queenscliff to see the exit of the m2d and westcoaster

thanks cisco the radio performed above my expectation
so that was my xmas present

ps I was wondering about splitter for antenna but read about some of the issues that can be had using them so opted for separate antenna (simple dipole)
surprised the reception of vhf was so good and over fair distance with coastal complications

Glad that worked out well for you.

Tell me more about antenna splitters and their problems. When you say "dipole" I am assuming that would be an automotive type antenna like one of those flexible rubber ones???

the problems i heard re- spiltters related to additional connections to fail , not a good thing for unit transmitting

the antenna works well and is housed inside the cabin with no external access necessary
basic but works on PPB and remote vic
oh yeah and the description says "rust proof"

With a splitter, if there are problems with too many connections it can be disconnected and the antenna cable can be screwed directly to the VHF. I thought there might be problems with interference.

I will be talking with our local radio guy when he comes back from holidays and will let you know what he says.

That ebay dipole antenna looks to be just a length of coaxial ariel cable with a plug on the end. Your local Jaycar shop would probably make it for you for $3.

Like you say "rust proof", yeah sure I'll bet it is, for the first 5 minutes on a boat.
