When I bought my boat just over a year ago the raw water cooling temperature sensor was broken/eaten in half. $165 got me a new one. Less than a year later it is malfunctioning, the alarm sounds all the time regardless of the engine being hot or cold. So now I have to replace it. I was told that they are 'a bit like a light bulb' and you don't know how long they will last. Is this true?, is it the fault of the product or is the engine vibration responsible?. Asking around, someones theory was to do with the 'harmonics' set up by the engine. My engine is a single pot DV10ME. Do the DV20's suffer the same thing??.

Wellcome to the world of Quote from Cisco " B.O.A.T."
Quickest fix is move the sender to the block drain
I will be removing my thermostat housing today and then see whats going on as some one has stated that the housing gives the sender grief some how.
The genuine Bukh twin terminal sender has a protective coating on the sensor part .
I have emailed VDO about this problem and suggested a earth wire directly connected to the sender rather than a earth coming through the engine there response was it would work.
Down here a few Walker owners have had the same problem a mates gone through three senders and in the end a couple of owners have fitted the twin sender into the block. which is 14 mm thread
In the last thread on this topic in sea breeze someone cant remember who right now said the later model thermostat housing had more room for the sender units and he also modified his housing to allow more room for the sensor.
Ill pull it off today and take some photos to put in here Sam Sturdy

That's really interesting HG. I didn't know the block drain was the same thread dia. Easily done if that's so. I don't know if my engine is a later model or some changes have been made to make it appear so, if I gave the engine number to Bukh would they tell me??. I have found a supplier who can sell me the sensors for $70 instead of $165 but it's annoying to have keep changing them. Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for the thread HG very interesting. So it seems then reading that, the way out of this neverending sensor failure is to purchase a 14mm VDO SINGLE terminal sensor and fit that into the block drain hole. Have I got that correct??.

It appears that way but Ill pulling my thermostat housing off today and see what can be done to modify the housing so the sender unit fits with out adding a spacer so the sender does not bottom out . I also feel that the sender may not be getting a good earth with the spacer fitted . which may or may not cause electrolysis destroying the sender
I did notice the Genuine Bukh sender has some sort of coating on the sender prob.

Okay HG, please let me know what you find and if you can work out a remedy. The sensor I just put in (not from Bukh, but identical) did not appear to have a coating on it but then I can't recall the genuine one having a coating on either, unless the coating is transparent.

I replaced Buhk Temp Switch with SAAS temp display 4 Years ago sensor fits and have same dimensions as Buhk Temp Switch.

G'day
Temp sensor was working OK only reason I replaced it because is overtemp switch not sensor for gauge.
I try to find way to install old switch in to motor so I have warning light as well now I have only temperature gauge.

OK So you have a signal terminal sender at the moment. ,I would love to take my boat for a motor out in the bay , but wont till I sort out the temp gage not taking any chances
I will remove my thermostat housing today and see if I can modify it to suit the twin terminail sender and give the engine a good soak of vinegar to clean out the cooling system

Hi, HG. I had a talk to Kurt who supplied my replacement VDO sensor and he told me that the twin terminal sensor I got is a 14mm thread. I put a tape measure across it and it appears so. I should then just be able to take the drain plug out and screw the sensor in if what you say is correct about the drain plug being 14mm. I told Kurt what I had in mind and he said it would work although He reckoned the temperature SHOULD be taken at the top of the engine rather than the bottom. So have you heard any reports of this method NOT working properly because of the sensor placement. If there is good circulation of cooling water the sensor would still pick up on it being too hot even if it was at the bottom of the engine.....shouldn't it????.

Your right about having the senor in the head but I don't think theres much temperature difference and remember once you have used it a few time you would know what temp it operates at when using the motor and any alteration from that temp I would stop the motor and Investigate.
Thats the way I look at it Sam.
I think what the other users did was buy a single terminal sensor for the block and kept the original single terminal the head (Bukh original warning light and buzzer)

Okay HG. That sounds good and I think i'll give it a go, I only use the small spade terminal on the sensor anyway so for me it is only a single terminal sensor. So what I'll do is put the dead sensor back in the thermostat housing and put the new one in the block........see how we go.

Hi Colombo. HG and I are discussing the pros and cons of putting the sensor in the engine cooling water drain which apparently is a 14mm thread same as the sensor. There seems to be a school of thought suggesting the problem could be caused by the lack of space around the sensor in the thermostat housing, there should be no such problem lower down in the block.

Remeber the sensor they used in the block was the singal terminal sensor . I have no idea if the twin would fit it maybe longer

Oh Dear! The double temp sensor gremlins have got me!

Thought I could send extract as a picture file

Will have to type it out - from page O8 of the manual

"Fitting of Double Transmitter

Owing to considerations of space it may not be possible to fit a double transmitter on old thermostat housings.

This can be remedied (original spelling!) by soldering on ring piece No. 000E4136."

As you can see the DV20 thermostat housing the drilling for the sender is not completely drilled through and even if you did and then tried to use the twin terminal sender it would probably bottom out on the thermostat
As Jabbwock is saying if you use a spacer soldier it to the sender as the just putting the space in place will make it possible but you still have the electrolysis problem because
of poor earthing
And the other problem may be if you did drill it is it might be to close to the gasket and create a sealing problem I guess you might be able to machine a grove for an o ring and do away with the gasket

Bit left field but why not just use an engine watchdog alarm?

enginewatchdog.com/

The basic engine temp only unit is a sensor that can be mounted anywhere and the alarm can be configured accordingly. My Land cruiser has had one for 5 or more years and it It's v loud.

Yes it is a Bukh part number.
Cannot find it the Bukh site link given by Samsturdy. However google it and found at www.hafner-bootszubehoer.de/product_info.php/info/p178017_bukh-zwischenring-bb-000e4136.html. Cost you 9 euros!

I wonder if the VDO sender is the same length its quite possible it is not compared to the Bukh twin sender unit so be careful

Mine (see picture) is 40 mm. Same as yours!!! A VDO twin sender should fit yours. Cannot see that a Bukh sender will be different very likely to be source from same manufacturer (E. Europe).

If your'e there HG. I tried to fit the twin terminal sensor into the drain hole but it won't fit. It's not the thread size that's the problem but the dia. of the stem. The twin terminal sensor has a step up about an inch from the stem end and this won't go through the hole at the inner end of the drain hole. I'm assuming therefore that the single terminal sensor has a narrower stem the length of the sensor. I'll have to get around to investigating whether this is so.
