Hi there,
Sewing was something I did in school then when I finished school I finished sewing.
I would like to learn about sewing sails, it will be a helpful tool when out travelling the world. I dont mind volunteering or classes etc but I am looking for hands on if possible.
Thank you in advance.
Cheers
If you check out you tube and look for sailrite they have videos on bimini making sail bags. With and with out lazy jacks for a start
I think you would need sailmakers trade under a local company
Which will take a few year's to finish
Having done sewing at school you are ahead of the game from most who repair their own sails, so if you have a sail maker nearby, why not volunteer to work a few days in return for being shown the basics. Also get a copy of this book:
www.amazon.com/Sailmakers-Apprentice-Emiliano-Marino/dp/0071376429
and check this page out:
www.frayedknotarts.com/sailmaking.html
and thishttp://www.ebay.com.au/gds/SAIL-REPAIR-PRODUCTS-METHODS-Sticky-back-UV-protect-/10000000012221213/g.html
and the basic kit something like this:
I put these links up as an alternative to sail making as there is always a market for biminis and cuhgions and lazy jack sail bags Sail rite have lots of how to videos on making sailing textile equipment . These would give you the how too so with your talent of sewing should see you make a few dollars around the world
Most sail lofts these day seem to order there sails out of asia as labours cheap there .You could contact a few sail lofts in Australia see if they have any oppotunities for an apprentice or work to gain expiriance in this field
I got "The Sail makers Apprentice" by Emiliano Marino out of the library recently. It is a fantastic resource for sail making, designing, repair and just knowing everything about sails. It is available on Amazon.
try contacting the sailmakers in Brisbane uk, quantum, north,lr, you may pick up some work experience from them though be warned sailmaking like boat building dosn't pay well probably better off working in a coffee shop
