Re-fitted main winch on "Soliloque of Searle" our 42ft Jarrah ketch today, it was a bit gummy indside when I stripped it down,

Any suggestions on what to re-pack gearing with?? Very close to being able to sail her for first time since purchase and restoration. Excited as !!!

You mean lube?

Clean with kero, petrol, turps or brushing thinners. Waterproof bicycle bearing lube will work.

Just remember that that there are two components that need lubricating, one requires grease and the other requires oil.

The gear and bearing components can be greased with the same grease you would use on boat trailer wheel bearings.

The ratchet must be oiled with a relatively light oil, do not get grease on the ratched in case it sticks and prevents the ratchet from working freely.

Cleaning can be done with any solvent based cleaner, make sure to dry everything before lubricating.
