Speculation that the 42ft yacht was run over by a cargo ship.

Powered by Nissan Leaf car battery mounted under companion way steps. Other sites say they were found in a dinghy. My guess- short circuit fire. Impossible to extinguish. Burn a hole in the hull pretty quickly.

The only way to really know is find the boat. Since they had an AIS I would have expected they would know if there were other boats nearby - re the collision theory. Nissan Leaf Batteries have been known to overheat when charging and their charge current is meant to be automatically reduced when they get hot. I wonder if the refitted charge system did that. I agree with you Yara.

I watched there last few utube episodes leading up to there disappearance , he was making a dodgy spray dodger and there entire binimi was covered in solar panels to power the electric motor. Electric motors need water cooling they get hot. Backed with lithium battery's that are impossible to extinguish once on fire I would expect that may have been the reason a EPIRB wasn't activated. The cargo ship theory would be the only other possibility why someone would abandon ship without activating help.

Either way it's very sad and a great loss for their families. They made it into the liferaft but didn't survive that. RiP.

Yes very sad.

Have you got a link to the videos? All I found was a bunch of videos about them crossing the country in their Nissan leaf.

Leaf batteries are of course lithium ion rather than lithium iron phosphate; the former of course having inferior stability and far lower temperature threshold before thermal runaway occurs.
