Here is the vessel that is is fitted to.
1859 model submarine. Not sure about how successful it was as all of the explanation was in Spanish.
I really want to know what the doohicky on the bow was.

My guess the thing on the bow is the armament. A bomb or mine held in the basket an tipped out when alongside the enemy. The nose probe would detect the hull of the target ship. Any other theories?

Thanks fellas. Now I wish I had known more about what I was looking at.

For interior illumination he used a simple candle, which had the advantage of turning red when oxygen was beginning to run low and so alerted the crew.

Every sub should have one. LOL
