I've never tried foiling but am interested. Mainly to kite more days. I'm experienced in SUP surfing. I have a 9"2 budget Waterborn board. Can you retro fit a foil? Or is it too big? Trying to avoid the big cost. Or should I get a board that will suit both paddle and kite?

I converted an old 8.6" Laguna Bay Dogman model for foiling 5yrs ago and progressed alot quicker than I would if I went for a dedicated foil sup.
Link to who installed my foil box.

I would avoid: "9"2 budget" read "heavy" and "not very strong" (as in: no sandwich)
And long and heavy is not worth the trouble when foiling.
Especially for kiting.

Plus, having a box resisting the efforts from a long and heavy board will mean heavy (and costly) reinforcements.

I would look for 2nd hand foil boards.

I started foiling on a 8'9" SUP but it was a light & stiff carbon PVC sandwich board with pulled in tail and nose (low swing weight), with the box installed at the factory, because foil board shapes did not exist at the time. I would have progressed much faster with a modern board, as these big boards have a lot of inertia in their response that makes them tricky to control.
