For those getting into prone foiling make sure you keep riding your shortboard on a regular basis as its taken me months to dial a shortboard back in after prone foiling for 3 years.
Its been a real shock to see how much foiling destroys every part of riding a shortboard. Even changes the lines you need to take on a shortboard compared to a foil. I cant begin tell you how embarrassing it was trying to surf head-high noosa perfection.....!
After the pain of relearning to surf its worth it and its great to now be able to use the right equipment to suit the conditions.
Mow the lawn kitesurfing really helps getting used to a surfboard again.
Try going from SUP Foil back to ordinary SUP - primary stability is completely gone with the removal of the foil "trainer wheels". Riding a wave you are constantly trying to build speed by pumping...to no avail. We call it going back to analogue. Don't touch my analogue SUP anymore.
I can't imagine surfing without foiling.....and vice versa. It is easy to get caught up during the learning process....then later 'froth' period. Never forget your surfboard though
I have been prone foiling for 6 years and wing foiling since the start. I am a life long shortboard surfer with about equal amount foiling to surfing right through the 6 years of foiling and the foiling has done nothing but enhance my regular surfing. In fact some of my best surfing is on the first wave after a few foiling sessions. No adjust necessary at all.
it's not surfing for three years that is the issue. Imagine if you sup surfed for three years and then you try to get back on a 5'6" thruster. Same problem.

Tell me about, was SUP surfing Gerroa bombie at a good size last week and could barely stand on my 92L Prowave, and once on a wave just felt a bit dull compared to foiling.

After not surfing for a while, the pain on my ribs where they contact the surf board.
surf head-high noosa perfection.....! -I wish. Screw you.
Last time I got on the shortboard was a freakin horror show. It literally took me a good 10 waves to remember how to do a bottom-turn. So sad
It's all about muscle memory versus mind memory.
In my view change from one discipline to the other often. That gets the mind ready to recognise the changes to adjust from one to the other. And the muscles will stay in tune with the changes to be able to adjust quicker.
After staying away from the SUP for a long time due to SUP foiling I nose dived the SUP on the first couple of waves. This is now instilled in my head to step back towards the back pad just as I catch a wave.
Also stability is reduced for both SUP & Foil SUP on the change over. Now it only lasts for around 10 minutes as I consciously relax my legs & feet.
SUP foiling really helped with having to be more in a surf stance before catching a wave. I forced myself to get used to being in a surf stance when foiling so that my back foot was over the mast always. So now when I go SUP surfing I am comfortable paddling around in a half surf stance & getting to a full surf stance before catching a wave which definitely made catching a wave easier.
I am now winging more often & have left both SUP & SUP foiling behind until I have mastered the basics.
But I look forward to the challenges & stoke going back.
And yes prone surfing is getting harder & harder for me due to age, fitness & back & neck injuries. But hey, I am stoked if I get up on a nice wave. Feels like riding it on a little skateboard.
Too many challenges & not enough time.
Yep same here being foiling so much these past years wing and supfoil that when I take my regular sup out when waves are a bit bigger hollower man I feel like the kook of the day just completely lost my ol regular sup skills which were pretty high back before foiling it's disappointing just always riding too far forward trying to Ollie up on foil and Lol there's no foil, lifelong surfer as well and just wondering wtf happened to my regular sup skills guess gotta put the foils away and put my head down get back used to it again
