Hi Guy ! Curious to know how long can we keep pumping on flat water ?

Please specify your gear.

i am around 1 minute 15 sec with a Maliko 280 for my 65 Kg.

With the wing in one hand holding the front handle, flat water Axis S1010 75 mast short fuse 400 stab Jimmy Lewis 5'11 85 kg 64yo
27 seconds and than I am out of gas

Looking forward to the Axis S1150!

I think it might be important to note (based on the first response) how you start as well. Coming off a wave or wing surfing is different that a dock start. I'd guess you get 15 sec more just from momentum.

But this is a great thread. It's hard to judge yourself against the superhumans on Instagram and YouTube.

I was speaking about Dock Starts or rock start on flat water. Agree this will help us to judge ourselves and the progress we have to make !

Was on about 30 seconds with the Maliko 280. Now using the GL 240 and maybe up to about 40 seconds. Training hard off the water as well to try to improve my pump time. Jumping off boats, rocks and even a ladder close to shore.
ADVICE NEEDED - I can pump away from the beach and parallel to it, but once I've turned to go back to the beach I lose height rapidly and usually end up planting the nose. Anyone know why?

I know if there is even the slightest headwind It kills my pumping , and conversely a tailwind helps heaps.

i tried the GL 240 it was really a new thing to learn compared to the Maliko but I managed to go really really quicker and the micro swell was not an issue anymore.

For my ladder start I always try to position the ladder in the good direction of the wind or sweep to be in my back.

Interesting to read that from the 280
to the 240 the pumping time doesn t improve so much. I had the same feeling aside speed of mouvement, I even prefer the glide of the 280

A couple of things I've noticed different about the 280 compared to the 240. The 280 is a much more physical pumping action - stomping down with the front foot and springing up again before a very exaggerated compression while leaning forward (more of a pivot at the hips than a lean) and then repeat. The 240 is a much more gentle pumping action - more up and down rather than throwing your weight forward. The 240 seems to be much more back foot orientated - pushing down momentarily with both, then continuing with the back foot while the front foot controls the angle of ascent - a bit like an olly in skateboarding. I find if I get it right, I can get the 240 into a lovely rhythm that uses up a lot less energy than the 280. It's also A LOT faster than the 280!!!!
I could be completely wrong about everything I've said about technique as I've not had a chance to properly dial the 240 in yet, but I've been studying youtube videos of flat water pumping in an attempt to copy what I think they are doing and it seems to be working - to a certain extent. Defo not very efficient yet though. Here's a link to my best effort yet off the ladder. Much harder than off a boat or dock.

My ramblings about flat water pumping technique - comparing the Maliko 280 vs the GL 240. I hesitated to post this on here because you guys are way more advanced than me, but I thought what the hell - I could learn a lot from your comments. Just hoping you don't think its all a load of rubbish.

Nice technique Filow, and I love the style of your video - quality!!! Your technique on the 280 clearly shows the porpoising action that I try to explain in my video. Have you tried the GL240 or any HA wing yet? Would love to hear what you think of them.

I tried the GL 240, it was a bit tricky to pump it at the beginning exactly cause of the different kinda movement you have to do.

Actually I have an Armstrong 2400 and this is for me the best of both world. What I love with the Maliko is the low speed lift, this is so useful when you do a ladder start for exemple.

The GL was not good at low speed due to what it is !

I am still working on the Armstrong 2400 but this is a kind of between the tow GO Foil wings. It took a lot of tries for me to start pumping it, but I believe the shorter 60cm fuse was the main reason.

Your video is a precious information for all the people who will come to this sport ! congrats man !

The Armstrong 2400 sounds awesome!!!!!!!! I agree that the GL's are harder to get started than the maliko 280, there's almost no margin for error with the GL. Even now my consistency at starting with the GL isn't much more than about 60%, but I'm sticking with it coz once you are going it's great, and it's amazing in small waves and doing downwind runs!
I've heard so many people say opposite things about using a short fuse. I've no doubt they are better for surfing, but some say they help flat water pumping and some say a longer fuse is better...so, I'm getting the short pedestal for the GoFoil fuse and will try it for myself ??

I agree I am actually testing the 60 and 70 cm armstrong Fuse. I believe this is a matter of personal preference. I will try to make a report about my feeling !

After other tests I totally prefer the 70cm fuse for dock start much power under the back foot and you don t have to pump too quickly ( at least as quickly as the 60cm ) to gain speed.

so i have an Armstrong 60 cm fuse to sell.

Hey Dommo- appreciate this explanation. Something to work on tomorrow hopefully. My pump game is pretty weak and I have been at a loss w/ very little progress other than an occasional freak run where it clicks for 20 secs.... then I can't seem to repeat it. As someone who usually catches onto things pretty quickly- I am hummmmmmmbled. I have exactly 1 2:1 to my name on a perfect set up where I came out of with speed and another wave was right there not far behind. Other than finding a boat to get behind- I'm just not sure how to improve.

What I did I spent several hours training at it, and trying few changes. Like a Washer or not and finding the good position for the mast for me.

Yesterday I give a try to a 70 vs 60 cm, for me the 70cm help a lot, it give you more time for everything and I believe I can pump this one longer.

My set up is a Armstrong 2400, with +1 washer on the HS tail, and 70 cm fuse.

I only do dock start with no speed, in my place I can only jump from a dock or a rock, I can't run and jump here cause of the spots.

Yeah I get what you're saying. Everything to do with foiling seemed to be impossible to begin with, like you I had the occasional freak run where I hit it lucky, but never really knowing what I did to make it work that time. All I can say is keep practicing - practice practice practice - suddenly it'll happen, and from that moment on your progress will be so rapid you'll not have time to blink!!!!!!!!
For me a lot of the learning came about by feel. If your position doesn't feel right then it probably isn't, if it feels right but you're still not getting it right it might not be wrong, it might just mean you need to practice more. Keep looking at YouTube vids to see what others are doing and how they are doing it and try micro adjustments until you find your sweet spot and your preferred style.
You can't until you can!
